A scholarship is a reward, which is given by financial help to the students to further education. Scholarships are awarded on different condition, generally reflecting the reasons and values of the founder or benefactor of the award.
The scholarships are divided into four groups:
Merit-based: This award is based on a student’s academic, creative, sporty, or other abilities, and the aspect of an applicant’s “social service” record and extracurricular activities. Mostly the merit-based scholarships are awarded by either “private organizations” or by a student’s existing school or college, identifying academic achievement or high scores on the ACT and SAT standardized tests.
Need-based:
Need based: This award depends on the student’s financial background and candidates have to fill up a “FAFSA” from to be eligible for federal scholarship. The scholarships will be given on the basis on the result of “FAFSA”. It determines a student’s financial requirement, by using a formula looking at the estimated family contribution and cost of attendance at the future college.
Student-specific: In this form of scholarships, at first, candidates have to meet the criteria by gender, race, medical history, religion, and family and numerous other “student-specific” issues. “Minority scholarships” are the most common awards in this form of scholarships this category is available for every student, not only for US based students, such as students of Canada can be eligible for a many “aboriginal scholarships”, even if they study at home or overseas.
Career-specific: These scholarships are given by an academy or institution to students, in which they want to pursue a particular field of study. This form of scholarship is often provided to students who want to pursue careers in higher areas such as “culture or nursing”.
A number of scholarships have a “bond” conditions. Applicant can be asked to work for a specific employer for a particular period of time or to work in rural or remote areas. Else they have to repay the value of the support they receive from the scholarship. This programs is offered by the
“Uniformed services” of the America such as, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration commissioned corps, and Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, often resemble such scholarships.

- Investigate about scholarship program at least a year before entering college.
- Find out if you are a member of an underrepresented group, in financial need, or interested in certain fields of study. Scholarships are usually available for those candidates who have special talents in many areas, such as art music, sports and science.
- If you want to pursue graduate college, then think about applying for a fellowship a scholarship for graduate students.
- Identify what you are expecting when you ARE applying for a scholarship. Some intuition provides payment for entire expenses, while other just pay for board and room.
- Fill up your application form by using No. 2 pencils.
- Be ready to answer general questions including name, address, and social security number, date of birth, citizenship status and marital status.
- Give the details of your financial information such as total family income, number of children in your family, and number of children in college. Round the amount dollar amounts with the whole number values.
- Give information about your special talent, which is required by the scholarship, and for which you are applying.
- Send your all paperwork to the address mentioned on the application form.
- Wait for a month to find out if you have got the scholarship or not and what amount you will receive from it.
