eyesight improvementHow many people do we see on the streets wearing glasses? Less? Okay, now how many people do we know who use contact lenses? Quite less, or maybe none. And how many people do we know, who has had a laser treatment? Maybe one, or no one at all. And how many people have we encountered who’s had an optical surgery, or a cataract treatment? And how many might actually be out there, who choose to let it go, and not get their vision treated or repaired? Because they can’t afford it, or maybe because they don’t mind facing difficulties reading objects that are far or near.

It only seems that people have healthy eyesight. There are millions out there, who suffer from weak or impaired vision. Now, since technology is ready at disposal, we find it easier to get the eyes treated through medicine. However, following a healthy diet alone can restore a major part of your vision back to normal. And this method of healing will not only last long, but also decrease the chances of recurrence.

Given below are few tips to improve your eyesight:

  • Always ensure that your eyes and the surrounding area is hydrated adequately. You can use an eye cream to keep it well moisturized.
  • Drink lots of water, it helps to eject toxins from the entire body, and will help keep your eyes healthy
  • Sleep well to subject your eyes to adequate amount of rest, which ensures optimal restoration
  • Eat 5 peeled almonds everyday (soaked in water overnight)
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin are fat soluble antioxidants, which can be found in egg yolks. These are found in good amounts in the retina. Early cataract cases are prescribed a daily intake of 6 mg of supplemental lutein.
  • Include sulfur rich foods such as onions, garlic, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, brocolli, kale, avocados, watermelon, asparagus etc

Hunt for minerals

Finding mineral rich foods in an age where vegetables are grown in mineral-depleted soils, can become a difficult task, but we do require adequate amount of minerals to keep our eyes in good health. Zinc, magnesium, and selenium have a major role to play in keeping our body functioning smoothly. High concentration of zinc in retina suggests that we must include in our diet, zinc rich foods such as fish, meat, poultry, and oysters. Magnesium, which regulates the blood flow to the eyes, can be found in nuts and green leafy vegetables. Selenium, which is found in shellfish, whole grains, and Brazilian nuts, are linked to the prevention of cataract.

The role of Vitamin A

Vitamin A is the pioneer of eyesight. Natural foods that are rich in Vitamin A include tomatoes, spinach, carrots or turnips. Cucumber and potatoes are also good for improving your eyesight. If you are back home after a long tiring day, place some round pieces of potato or cucumber on your eyes for 10 minutes. If you’re getting sufficient amount of vitamin A through your daily diet, then this won’t work. If you know, getting too much of retinol (found in fish liver oils, liver, butter etc) can prove toxic to the body, and might even result in cancer. The body converts carotenoids into vitamin A as required by the system. Including vegetables like broccoli and sweet potato, along with dark green leafy vegetables in your diet will improve your eyesight. Other sources of Vitamin A include pumpkins, cantaloupe melons, collard greens, apricots, eggs, mangoes, peas, winter squash, and broccoli leaves.

Like any muscle, our eyes also need exercise in order to stay fit. These days, we stress our eyes a lot, either by staring at the computer screen for too long or by wasting our eyesight on watching meaningless shows on the TV. Here’s an easy exercise that ensures relaxed eyes – Everyday, as you wake up in the morning, practice moving your eyes up and down, from side to side, in squares, or zig-zag. Do this for about 5 minutes as you start your day, and your eyes will be taken care of from thereon, naturally.

The hot palm technique

Rub your palms against each other, until you start to feel they are warm. Now, shut your eyes and place the warm palms gently on your eyes. Ensure that there are no gaps between your fingers, and that no light can pass through them. Here, with you eyes closed, imagine a black space or a spot, and focus on it. Keep your breathing normal during this process; and now imagine a happy place, and if you still manage to see the black color, then take your hand out and open your eyes slowly. Repeat this entire process at least 5-8 times, and you’ll feel very refreshed.

Self-massage

Close your eyes, and massage your eyes in a circular motion, with the help of your fingers. Continue for a minute gently; make sure that you do not put a lot of pressure on your eyes. Open your eyes, start rolling them in anti-clockwise and clockwise directions. You must do it at least 5 times, and practice blinking your eyes in between.

The far and near technique

Sit in a comfortable place and 10 inches away from your windowpane. Make a small marking on the window, which is at your eye level. Focus on it for about 10 seconds. Now, look beyond this mark, and try to focus your attention on something else in the background for 10 more seconds. Repeat the cycle for about 1 or 2 minutes. This exercise aims to strengthen your eye muscles, and improves your overall vision.

Zoom excercise

Take a pencil and keep it at arms length, start moving your arm slowly towards your nose. While doing so, you need to keep your gaze fixed at the top end of the pencil. You can even replace the pencil with your thumb. Repeat this exercise 10 times. This will help develop your focusing skills.

The invisible eight

Imagine a large figure of 8 in front of you, and trace the outline of the invisible figure with your eyes slowly. Do this both ways, and continue for a couple minutes. This exercise is proven very effective in increasing the flexibility of your eyes, thus improving your vision.

Blink well
