How to Install Solar Panels

A solar panel is also known as a solar thermal collector. It is designed to collect all the sunlight and heat by absorbing it. This term is used for a variety of solar applications like solar water heaters and solar lights, solar troughs and solar towers. The complex collectors are usually used in the large solar power plants, in which the solar heat is used to generate electricity. These processes are done by heating water and drive it in a turbine, which is connected to the electrical generator. There are mainly two types of solar panels, namely flat plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors.

  • Flat plate collector: this is one of the most common kinds of solar panel and was first introduced in 1950. This panel consists of a dark plate, transparent cover, heat fluid and a backing with heat insulators. The heat area in the solar panel is wide and hence, it is preferred over the traditional solar panels.
  • Evacuated tube collector: this collector has multiple tubes, which heats the solar absorbers and gives hot water through hydronic space. There are two types of tube collectors an old pump style and U-shaped tube style.

Solar panels are a good way to save electricity. It saves a lot of money and installing solar panels is not difficult. Here are some simple steps on how to install solar panels.

Things Required:

  • Solar panels mounts
  • Solar photovoltaic panels
  • Solar panel conduit
  • Tape measure
  • Twine/laser sight
  • Drill
  • Pilot drill
  • Stud finder
  • Stainless steel lag bolts
  • Metal rails
  • 3/8 inch steel bolts

Steps:

  • First, you will have to conduct an energy audit to understand what amount of electric energy should be generated on your rooftop. This will give you an idea of how many solar panels you will need, and how much electricity you will save through this panels.
  • Decide what types of mounts you will require. All the solar panels use different kinds of mountings depending on the place and manner of installing them.
  • Decide the position of the rafter of your house on the top of your roof. Do this with the stud finder. After installing the solar panels, the rafters will be supporting them.
  • Mark the place where you want to install the mount; measure the space you will need for every single panel. To ensure that all the mounts are aligned properly, you can use a laser sight or twine.
  • For the mounts, you will have to use the pre drill holes or pilot bit. This process will avoid all the damage on the rafters from your drill. Carefully drill the mounts and secure them on the roof. To hold the mounts in the place you should use lag bolts. Attach all the rails in the mounts using a 3/8 inch bolt.
  • Along the rails, you must install the solar panels. Make sure that each panel is well secured in the place. Now, you will have to run a conduit on the solar panels along with the converter in your house. Ensure that the conduit is fixed properly and will not break even in extreme weather conditions.

Tips and Warnings:

  • Before you install all these panels, don’t forget to consult a professional and get a rough idea about the installation. He/She will give you various tips and ideas for mounting the panels.
  • Make sure that you place the solar panels in a place where they can receive maximum amount of sunlight.
