How to Make a Banner

A banner is a kind of flag or other piece of cloth, which carries a symbol, logo, slogan or other message on it. Banner making is an antique craft. The word “banner” has derived from Late Latin bandum, “bandum” means a cloth out of which a flag is made.  Germans have developed the word “bundum” to mean an official edict, since such written orders often are forbidden; it is some form of human activity. The meaning of bandum was assumed to be ban, control, interdict or excommunication.

There are many types of banners such as “heraldic banner”, also called banner of arms, displays the basic coat of arms only, banners in a religious context such as banners in church. Trade union banner, has been made in 1840s in Britain. A popular example of large banner on display is Liverpool R.C. Cathedral, that banner was designed by a resident artist.  Banners can be seen at the boundaries of many business ventures, advertising to their potential audience.

Things required making banner:

  • Fabric; bed sheet, a drop cloth, canvas. Get a dirty material so that you can paint on it, thicker fabric is good to work with.
  • Brush; you can use any kind of paintbrush, small for details and big one to cover lots of space.
  • Paint; you can use acrylic paints, old latex paint, you can also use water down ink.

Procedure:

  • Painting is fun, it’s more fun when you do it with others, schedule your “art build” week before your action to make props for the big day.
  • Post you schedule on the 350 page for your event, call your friends for help if you want and see if they can get extra materials.
  • Place your fabric on the ground and pin it or staple, nail, tape it up to wall. Keep something under the fabric or else paint can bleed through thin fabric and ruin it.
  • Use chalk and pencil for sketching on fabric, you can easily erase it from fabric. Marker can be used to outline once you finish sketching.   Use your imagination and be creative with your banner making.
  • If you banner is about some social issue, write your message clear and bold enough to that everyone can see it. Use appropriate colors to your message such as for AIDS awareness use red color as red is associated with AIDS.
  • After sketching it’s time to paint your banner. You can put tape along the line of what you painting, if you want your banner to look neat and extra clean.
  • Remove the tape when you are done with painting. Experiment with colors, mix up different color and use it on your banner.
  • You can get lots of variation from just few colors. If you will use more color, your banner will look better and attractive.
  • If you want to grab the attention of world, show them how vibrant your movement is.
