How to Make Baby Food

Baby food is the only kind of food, which apart from mother’s milk (breast milk), is best suited for babies. Baby food can be given to the age group of four months to 3 years. It comes in different varieties and tastes, you can get all the different types in the market, or you can just mash up your table food. Newborn babies do not have teeth, so their food is designed for effortless eating. Baby foods have to be liquid, soft and paste which the babies can easily gulp.

The idea of baby food is to have only liquid food but sometimes mixed cereal such as rice and pulse water, is also a good formula for babies. Smashed vegetables and fruits are a good example of baby food. It is suggested that, babies should be given solid food after 6 months, but it totally depends on the baby’s ability. Baby food should be introduced only after watching the signs of readiness in a child. It includes the ability to sit on their own (without any support) loss of tongue thrust and show an active interest toward foods. In 20th century, infants would start on solid food at the age of 4 to 5 months, however   the research by the WHO/ UNICEF has suggested that only mothers milk (breast milk) should be given for up to 6 months of age.

Traditionally (in India), the first baby food was paste of grains and liquid. In the western countries, baby food was made at home until mid 1900. The first commercial baby food was prepared in Netherlands. It was prepared in 1901 by Martinus van der Hagen through Nutricia Company. “Pablum” was the first dry baby food which was introduced in year 1930 it was specially made for sick children. In 1987, twin brothers Ronald and Arnold koss made first most popular organic baby food named “Earth’s best baby food”.  After this innovation, many companies introduced organic baby food.

Steps to prepare baby food:

  • First get some fresh fruits or vegetables, wash them thoroughly to remove dirt and pesticides.

  • Boil the vegetables or fruits, mash them properly, if the baby has just started on solid stuff, it will be easy for him to gulp the food.

  • Smash the food in a food processor or blender until the food becomes edible for the child.

  • Remove the stray peels from the food or you can remove the peels before cooking, it will be easy and convenient to prepare the food.

  • Put the smashed food into ice cube trays, wrap them with plastic wrappers and place them in the freezer.
  • Take out the ice cube once it is frozen; keep them in a zip lock bags or in airtight containers. Label them with date of manufacture and the type of food.

  • When you want to feed your child, remove the cubes from the container and allow them to defrost in a microwave.

Tips:

1. The best foods for babies are fresh fruits and vegetables. You can also use frozen or canned food material, canned fruits or vegetables are good when fresh fruits are out of season.

2. When your baby starts on solid food, introduce only one food item at time to identify if your baby have any allergies with any type of food.

3. Avoid preservatives, sugar, and salt as babies don’t need them and they can cause allergies to them.

4. Start you child’s solid diet with fruits like apple, banana, pears, carrots, peas, butternut squash, and sweet potato.
