How to Make Compost

Compost basically is a combination of the animal materials, organic substances and decomposed plants. It is made by largely decomposing it through aerobic decomposition in rich black soil. The entire process of composting is very simple and practiced by many in their house, farms and industries.

The soil of compost is very rich and is used for various purposes. Some places where compost is used are gardens, agriculture, horticulture and landscaping. Compost soil is very essential for the land in various ways like fertilizer and soil conditioning. In ecosystems, compost soil is very useful for the process of erosion control, stream and land reclamation, landfill cover and wetland construction.

Compost is always recommended as an additive to soil, or other matrices like titlh, peat and coir, which supplies all the humus and nutrients. It is always recommended to not place the seeds directly in the compost as this will stop the germination process. Making compost has become very easy now. Here are some simple steps on how to make compost.

Things Required:

  • Spading fork
  • Green material
  • Brown material
  • Shovel
  • Hose

Steps:

  • Select a place which is handy for you like your garden or kitchen area. You will not require a bin to make compost. You can use stuff like pile of leaves, grass clippings and some other stuff; a bin helps in keeping the compost contained and makes it look neater. You can corral the compost in a very simple wire column, which is made from a 4-foot wide by 8-foot stiff wire mesh.
  • If you want you can also buy a permanent bin, or make a three bin compost system with the help of recycled pallets and slatted woods. You will have to leave the bin open, so that you can easily add compost material in it. Once you have added all the compost, cover it with a sheet of plywood. The three bin system will allow you to turn the compost from one bin to another. You can store the compost in the three bin system until you want to use it.
  • The two main components that make good compost are green garden debris and brown garden debris. All the green ingredients are high on nitrogen, and the brown ingredients are high on carbon. If you add too many green components, the pile of compost will be smelly. Make sure that you do not add animal waste, meats, oils, dairy or weeds in the compost.
  • The compost pile should have a ration of one part green for two parts of brown ingredients mixed properly. You must keep adding these ingredients until the pile in 3 feet. Piles of this size will heat quickly and will break down real fast.
  • To start the microbial activity in your pile, you can add a shovelful of finished compost or some garden soil.
  • Compost always requires the correct amount of moisture to breakdown. Compost with the right moisture level will feel like damp sponge. Make sure that the pile does not contain too much moisture. Every week, you will have to check the moisture level of the pile, by adding little water and brown ingredient to it.
  • Turn the pile every week from outside to inside. Turning the pile will keep the pile away from compacting. This will reduce the air flow and slow the rate the decomposition.

You will finish the entire process of making compost in 2 months. You can identify your ready compost when you won’t be able to see any original material in it. The compost should be dark brown in color, moist and exude an earthly smell. Now, you can use your compost in the garden.
