How to Make Glass

A glass in vague, solid and non-crystalline material they are very delicate and transparent substances. There are various types of glasses. Earlier glasses were made of silica, which was melted like sand. Now, due to the industrial revolution, the word glass is used for vague substances, without knowing its ingredients. In modern times, glass is made from plastic, silica or synthetic fiber.

Glasses are man-made, but there are many instances of the glasses occurring naturally under specific circumstances. Generally, glass is made by heating solid material till it reaches the melting point, which eventually turns the solid into liquid. The final product of this entire process is glass, which can be formed into various shapes and then cut accordingly. Glass has many notable qualities as a building material. Some other good qualities of glass are that is easy to make, has good strength and it prepared from easy materials.

Many of the new technologies completely rely on glass and things won’t work out for them without it. A few technologies existing today due to glass are fiberoptics, carbon fiber and fiberglass. As new advances come, there will be many new applications for glass. There are bulletproof glasses, which have proved to be efficient for saving lives of many people. Making glass can be a tricky process. It might require you to be trained in conducting this process. Here are some simple steps on how to make glass.

Things Required:

  • Silica sand
  • Cullet
  • Grinder
  • Sifter
  • Measuring tape
  • Furnace
  • Melting cup
  • Strainer
  • Receptacle

Steps:

  • Take some sand and cullet, start grinding it together until it starts forming minute particles, which are uniform in size. You have to heat the raw materials together until they reach a desired melting point. Therefore, always make sure that the sand and cullet granules are similar in size or they will imperfection in the final product.
  • Take a sifter and sift this ground material to remove all the granules, which did not grind properly. You must always measure the ingredients, and this depends on the type of glass you are planning to make. The internet is the best source for getting information on the measurements. You will find measurements ranging from bead or ornaments to ancient glass models. These prove very efficient for replicating the glass.
  • Start heating the mold to the melting point and then add the ground particles of cullet and sand. If there are any additives required to be added in this mixture, then you must pour them now. The basic heat required for melting this mixture may vary, but you must at least reach a temperature of 2,912 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Always remember to remove all the impurities, which come up from the melting mixture. They usually appear in a brown or green form, you must take them out in a stationary container.

Now, you can start working with the tools that you need for making the finished glass. It is be very hard for you to believe that the red liquid is melted glass, and you need to form an object out of it. Products made from glass are ornaments, beads, drinking glasses and windowpanes, but they are not considered as actual glasses.
