How to Make Gravy

Gravy is a type of sauce, which is made from the natural juices of vegetables or meat while cooking. One can color or flavor the gravy further with various gravy slats, caramel coloring or ready to use powders, which act as the substitutes to the actual meat. If cooking is difficult then there are canned gravies in market that are very easy to use. Gravy is usually served with food like meatloaf, mashed potato, roasts or rice. Gravies can be thickened with starch, wheat flour or cornstarch. It uses the liquid from the cooked meat or vegetable stock, which is added to the gravy mixture and cooked.

Mostly people prefer eating gravy with chicken, pork, beef, turkey sandwiches or Yorkshire pudding. People in South America eat gravy with American biscuits. In Canada, chips and gravy is a very famous dish. Gravy is an important part of food for the Canadians. The word gravy does not always mean the use of thick sauces. Making gravy is very simple. Here are some simple steps on how to make gravy in two styles.

Steps:

(Gravy with cornstarch)

  • Take the roast out of the pan and place it on a stove over medium heat. Pour all the drippings in an empty pan but just leave 2 tbsp drippings in the roast.
  • Now, you will have to make a thin paste so take 2 tbsp of cornstarch and mix it with little amount of water for making a paste. Pour this paste in the drippings and take a spatula to mix it properly with the drippings.
  • Keep stirring it constantly until the gravy becomes thick. When the gravy starts thickening, you can add stock, water, cream or milk as a combination. Let this mixture heat properly and in the end you will get thick gravy. Add some seasoning like salt and pepper.

(Gravy with flour)

  • Take the roast out of the pan and pour all the drippings just leave 2 tbsp in the roast. Place this roast on medium heat on stove. Add nearly 2 tbsp of flour in the drippings and mix it continuously. The gravy will start becoming thick. You must continue cooking this mixture until the flour starts getting brown in color.
  • Now add some more of the drippings to this mixture, or you can add milk or cream to increase the quantity of the gravy. Now your gravy is ready and you can season it with herbs, pepper and salt.

How to make Turkey gravy:

Ingredients:

  • Drippings of turkey
  • Turkey stock
  • 6 tbsp flour
  • Wire whisks
  • Roasting pans
  • Gravy boats

Steps:

  • Once the turkey has been cooked, keep it aside. Take a pan and pour the drippings of the turkey in this pan. If there are any crispy, bits of turkey add this in the gravy. Allow the dripping to stand for a while and take out the fat, which has been accumulated at the top of the drippings. Add a little stock so that the quantity of the gravy increases.
  • Set the gravy pan on low heat. Take at least 6 tbsp of fat and put that in the roasting pan. Sprinkle some flour on this fat and mix it properly. Keep stirring it continuously until the flour starts turning brown in color.
  • Allow it to cook for five more minutes. Now, your gravy is ready and you can season it with salts, pepper and herbs.
