How to Make Perfume

A mixture of aroma compounds, fixatives, fragrant essential oils and solvents is called as perfume. It is used by humans and on animals to make them smell pleasant. Its also used in cars and houses etc to get rid of foul smells or at least to cover them up. The word perfume is derived from the Latin word “per fumum” which literally means through smoke. The art of making perfumes was first implemented by ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians and was later refined by Persians and Romans. Knowledge of perfume making came to Europe with the spread of Islam during the 14th century. The first modern perfume was made in 1370 for Queen Elizabeth and was known as Hungary Water. In this tutorial we will learn how to make perfumes at home.

Ingredients required:

  • 2 tablespoons of beeswax
  • 2 table spoons of unscented almond oil
  • 15-30 drops of essential oils (should be available at local food stores or pharmaceutical)
  • a container to store the perfume. (Preferably glass or alternatively plastic)
  • couple of straws
  • a small glass jug to mix the ingredients
  • a deep saucepan to heat water

Method:

Take the small glass jar and pour the almond oil in it. Add beeswax and mix thoroughly.

Add about an inch of water to the saucepan. Keep it on a stove and let it boil. Keep the jar with the mixture of oil and beeswax in this saucepan. This is to ensure that the oil blends in completely with the beeswax. When completely melted remove from the heat. Use gloves to refrain from burning yourself.

Add the essential oils to the small glass jar. Use the straw and mix the essential oils along with the other ingredients. Mix for about 5 minutes till you make sure it’s completely blended in. Some of the wax might begin to dry so hurry.

Pour the whole mixture into a final container. The mixture should begin to harden immediately and should be done within half hour.

To use this homemade perfume rub it on a finger and apply it wherever necessary.

Tips:

Buying the right essential oil is the most expensive part of making your own perfume. On a tight budget make simple perfumes using only one scent. For more lavish budgets feel free to mix and match to get a smell of your choice.

If you are a hobbyist building up a collection of different essential oils will give you a lot of options while making you own perfume.

Making your own perfume is a lesser expensive alternative to buying your own perfumes. Additionally it gives you the freedom to have your own unique scent. You can also gift these homemade perfumes to family and friends, a cheaper and more unique option to buying.

Aromatherapy is fast becoming popular and a little google search can yield cures to all your health problems. Example, adding lavender will help you sleep more comfortably and keep you relaxed while adding some citrus makes you more energetic and active.
