How to Make Salsa

Salsa refers to a special type of sauce. Salsa is a Latin word, it means “salty” or “salt”.  In America, it is often referred to the spicy, tomato based, hot sauce of Hispanic cuisine, specially used as dips. In British, the word salsa refers to “salsa Cruda”.  Salsa cruda is also very common in Mexican, Spanish and Italian cuisine.

Salsa sauce originated from the Inca people; salsa (combination of tomato, chilies and other spices) can be traced to the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas. The history of salsa begins in 1519-1521, when Spanish first encountered tomatoes after their conquest of Mexico. Once Aztec lords combined tomato with chili peppers, ground squash seeds and consumed them as a condiment served on turkey, lobster, fish and venison. In the year 1571 this combination was termed as salsa.

In 1916, Charles E. Erath of New Orleans became the first person in salsa sauce history, who started manufacturing extract of Louisiana pepper, red hot Creole pepper sauce. After a year, La Victoria foods started “salsa brave” in Los Angeles.

In 1923, Louisiana baumer foods started manufacturing crystal hot sauce; in 1928 bruce foods started making original Louisiana hot sauce. These are the two salsa sauce brands still in existence.
