How to Make Sugar

Sugar is a white powder like (edible crystalline) substance, used in food to make it sweet. Sugar is also known as sucrose, fructose, lactose, and it comes from two plants “sugarcane” and “beet”. Sugar is a rich source of carbohydrate, and it can be found it fruits, sorghum, honey, sugar maple, etc. Sugar is the main ingredient for candies and chocolates etc.

Scientifically, Sugar is also referred as monosaccharide (simple sugar) or disaccharide. One of the best examples of monosaccharide is glucose, it stores chemical energy which is converted into other types of energy by biological cells. The words which ends with “-ose” is mainly referred as sugar for example glucose, dextrose etc.

There are various types of sugars such as, demerara sugar, muscovado sugar, superfine sugar, panela jaggery sugar, sugar cubes, turbinado sugar, powdered sugar, flavoured sugar, panocha sugar, decorating sugar.  Sugar gets easily dissolved in water or in any other liquid to form syrup. There are lots of foods which contain dissolved sugar which is termed as “syrup”. They have some specific name also like honey, treacle, and molasses.

Sucrose is one type of sugar commonly used by humans for varying the properties and flavor of food. Sugar, which is commercially available generally, comes from either sugar beets or sugarcane. “Palm sugar” and fructose are mainly used in manufactured food (commercially available food). Palm sugar and fructose are obtained from maize (corn) and from fruits.

Too much consumption of sugar can cause some dangerous diseases such as tooth decay, obesity, diabetes.  The consumption of sugar varies from country to country, depending upon the culture and traditions. Sugar consumption in India is “highest per- country, and in Brazil it has “highest per capita” consumption.

  • First of all you will have to get some fresh sugarcane, wash it properly, and remove all dirt from sugarcane before you cook it.

  • Clean the sugarcane with running water many times, and then press it constantly with larger rollers.

  • After pressing sugarcane in rollers you will obtain sugarcane juice, boil and cook that juice till the time water has completely evaporated from it.

  • Keep removing the dirty foam that gathers on the top of the syrup.

  • Remove the stringy product left over, and after that put the syrup in a large container to cook it further.

  • Keep cooking it until crystals occur, the raw sugar will appear as brown in color.

  • Now you will have to dry the sugar with hot air, for that you can use a dyer. After drying it, drive cool air over it.  Keep on repeating the entire process. Your homemade sugar is ready now.

For sugar making, you can use sugarcane which grown in Hawaii, California, Louisiana and many other countries worldwide.
