How to Open IDX File

IDX files are basic indexing files that have an .idx extension which is used to indicate the index of computer applications or programs in either Windows or Mac based systems. IDX or index files are capable of storing quick to access index functions that are used by programs to increase the speed of performing file and commonly used functions once hard disks, file directories and databases are indexed. Indexing is a normal program function that can sort and quickly search data when needed and can speed up data calls from database files. This article will elaborate on how to open idx files.

IDX files commonly accompany programs that have an in-built indexing function that is necessary to sort data. These files are included under the dBase Database Index files category by some file extension managers. DBase is a prominent Database Management System (DBMS) used for indexing all the operations and functions in computers. Windows uses it to index into a database file. Some applications that associate IDX files for indexing are AOL, FAX file, Arc View, Clip Gallery (MS Office), Complete works, FoxPro, ICQ, Java applet cache index system, Latex Index, Outlook express, Pro/ENGINEER, Stork format header information, VSFilter etc. Normal applications or editors cannot open idx files as they are highly encrypted data and are not easily accessible. Trying to open .idx files using editors such as Notepad, WordPad or other strong editors would either prompt a virus attack by your Anti-virus program or would hang your system. IDX files are most vulnerable to virus attacks as they cannot be secluded and are continuously in use by the applications. Hence, sophisticated email editors have been developed to distinguish between virus threatened .idx and indexing files. IDX files can be opened under the windows platform using Aid4Mail and Outlook Express. Both these methods are described below:
