How to Prevent Arthritis in the Hands

Arthritis is the inflammation caused in the joints. There are many types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis and gouty arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common types of arthritis that can affect any part of the body. This arthritis can also occur in the joints of the hands such as wrist and fingers due to certain reasons. Some easy tips will help you know how to prevent arthritis in the hands.

Symptoms of arthritis in hands:

  • Pain and inflammation in the fingers and difficulty in moving them freely.
  • Inability to bend fingers and a lump on the back of the hand that becomes prominent as you move your fingers.
  • Swelling in the tendons and firms nodules along the fingers.

  • If you work in front of the computer systems and use the keyboards for a long time, this can cause repetitive stress on the joints in your hands due to repetitive motions.
  • Make sure that you take breaks in between when you have to work for prolonged periods so that you give some rest to your hands
  • Position yourself correctly while you sit in front of the system. Your keyboard should be at a height of 2 inches below the bent elbow of your hands.
  • Stretching exercises for your hands will also help in relaxing your hands. Make sure that your do these exercises every 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Massage your hands with moisturizers or oil every night before gong to bed. Massaging helps you in nourishing your joints.
  • Dip them in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes after you massage them. This will help in relaxing the joints.
  • Follow proper gestures. Avoid prolonged pitching, gripping and forceful gestures that strain your hands.
  • Select proper hand tools. Sometimes even small and frequent activities can also cause major damage to your hands. Therefore, selection of proper tools in the kitchen and your house also matter a lot.
  • Tools that force you to make a tight fist. Activities that force you to move your fingers towards your little finger should be avoided.
  • There are many joint protection and muscle strengthening exercises that should be taught to a person showing symptoms of arthritis.
  • Along with these, you also need to nourish your joints by providing proper nutrients to your body.
  • Calcium is one of the important minerals that are required to strengthen your joints. If your body gets enough amount of calcium and synthesizes it properly, you are less at the risk of having arthritis.
  • There are many other nutrients such as vitamins, fibers, magnesium, iron which are required by your body.
  • Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables that gives you all these essential nutrients.

Making a habit of the simple suggestions given above, you can easily prevent arthritis in your hands.
