How to Prevent Bed Sores

Bed sores are common among people who suffer from prolonged illness such as paralysis. Such people need to lie down for a long period on their bed. Some are even unable to change their positions, e.g. people in coma. Bed sores can cause wounds that are very difficult to treat. It is easier to prevent bed sores than treating them. This article on how to prevent bed sores gives you some simple suggestions on preventing them.

How to prevent bed sores:

  • People who are bedridden should change their positions regularly. This is very helpful in preventing bed sores.
  • Even if you stay immobilized for few hours it can cause bed sores. So shift your positions every 15 minutes.
  • If someone is sick and needs to lie in the bed for a long time then it is very essential that you work with your nurses or care takers to take their proper care and change their positions regularly in case they themselves can’t change their positions.
  • You can also use supports that will help you in changing their positions and inspect their body regularly. In case there are any scars or possibility of formation of bed sores on their back follow proper medication.
  • Apply antiseptic ointments to the sores, so that the wound does not worsen.
  • You can take help from a physical therapist to know the proper body positions to avoid bed sores in people who need to lie in their bed for prolonged period.
  • Support their legs properly. You can use a pillow or a foam pad that is available in the market to support their legs.
  • While providing support to their legs, do not place the support directly under the legs as it can restrict the blood flow. These can result into some other complications in the body as well.
  • Do not exert too much pressure on the hip bones. Exerting too much pressure on the hip bones can increase the chances of bed sores in the hip and the back. It becomes very difficult to lie on the back for such people who have developed wounds on their hip bones.
  • Do not raise their head too much from the body. Raising the head too much puts pressure on the back increasing the chance of injury due to strain on the back. It is best to keep such patients’ head flat or in the alignment of their body to reduce the risk of bed sores.
  • If the pillows are making the head rise too high then place some supports at the shoulders and also at the back so that you can align the patient’s body in a proper position.
  • Pressure reducing aids are available in the market. You can use these pressure reducing pads and mattresses at the back of the wheelchairs and the beds.
  • These beds are available with variable options such as, air, water, gel and foam mattress. You can use whichever you like. You can take help of a physiotherapist to select the pressure reducing pads.
  • Some people may find water pads as relaxing while some may find air pads relaxing; you can use any of them whichever you like.
  • Change mattress and sheets of the bed frequently. Wrinkle-free and smooth mattresses are a good option.
  • Cleanliness is very important. If the sweat or dampness persists on the patent’s skin for a longer time, it can cause bed sores.
  • As soon as you notice dampness in the skin, clean it using a disinfectant and apply talcum powder all over.
  • Inspecting the body regularly is very essential to detect if there is any possibility of getting the infection in the skin.
  • Massage the skin properly with lotions to prevent any kind of infections.
