How to Prevent Burns

Burns can be due to contact with any inflammable sources or they can occur due to overexposure to the sun. Burns can even occur when you follow improper techniques for shaving. All types of burns can irritate the skin and are serious if not treated on time. Taking precautionary measures for preventing them will be a helpful for you. Here are some precautions that will help you know how to prevent burns.

Preventing burns due to fire:

Burns that are caused due to fire are very dangerous and it is very difficult to cure them as well. While handling any inflammable sources you need to take proper preventive measures, so that you do not injure yourself. Here are some of the precautionary measures.

  • Avoid touching electrical switches and appliance with wet hands. This can cause shock circuit and ignite fire.
  • Keep electrical appliance away from water. Especially, water geysers and aluminum water heaters in bathrooms, curling irons, hair dryers, etc cause major problems.
  • Make sure that no live wires are hanging in any corner of your house and in the bathrooms. If there are any live hanging wires, call an electrician and get them fixed.
  • Keep children away from electrical switches. Ask you electrician to keep the switches at a height that is out of your child’s reach.
  • Install a stove shield while cooking the food and cook the food on rear burners. You need to be very cautious while cooking the food in the kitchen.
  • Do not allow your children to come close to the burners in the kitchen.
  • Keep the handles of the pans facing the wall so that, you do not thump them while cooking.
  • Turn off the main supply to the stove at night before going to bed.
  • Tie your hair properly while cooking the food and while handling any fire sources. Hair catches fire more easily than any other body part.
  • Do not smoke where there are any inflammable sources; also do not smoke on the bed.
  • Do not keep burning sources near your bed, such as mosquito coils, while sleeping.
  • If you are going for a long vacation, switch off the main supply of the electricity and check your house properly.
  • Install smoke detectors in your house and make sure that the smoke detectors are working properly.
  • You can also participate in fire drills. They will guide regarding the things that should be done during fire eruptions in emergency.
  • Keep fire extinguishers in your house. Keep it in a place that is easily accessible.
  • If you came in contact with fire and burn yourself, do not put water on the burnt area. It can worsen the condition.
  • Apply an antiseptic cream that will ease the irritation and cure the burn easily.
  • In case of severe burns, you should take the victim to the hospital immediately.
  • Hot water can also cause burns, so handle hot water carefully. Test the water prior to bathing.
  • Some chemical solutions that are acidic in nature can also irritate the skin and cause burns. Keep such solutions away from the reach of children.
  • Handle fireworks very carefully. Do not wear clothes made of synthetic fibers that are full sleeved, while handling fireworks.
  • Teach safety precautions to your children. If they cannot handle fireworks, keep them away from it.

Preventing sunburns:

Burns can also be due to excessive exposure to sun. If these sun burns are, severe then they can turn into cancerous cells. Most of the cases of skin cancer are caused due to sunburns, as the ultraviolet radiations emitted by sun cause cancerous mutations in the cells of the skin. Avoid going out when it is sunny and use proper protection in the form of sunscreen lotions, full clothes that cover up your entire body, etc to prevent sunburns.

Preventing razor burns:

Razor burns are the mild irritation caused on the skin due to improper technique of shaving. This can cause a burning sensation on your skin and is the reason for razor bumps and ingrown hair. You can prevent razor burns by following proper shaving techniques such as, use of a good blade, shaving in a proper direction, keeping your skin hydrated while shaving.
