How to Prevent Chickenpox

Chickenpox is caused by the virus varicellazoster and is much common among small children. Chickenpox is characterized by small, itchy and fluid-filled blisters. These blisters burst after some days and form crusts on the surface of the skin. It is hard to deal with these crusts, so it is necessary that you know how to prevent chickenpox.

This virus can also cause infection to the adults. The symptoms shown in children and adults are same. Symptoms of the viral infection usually appear after 10 to 21 days and the infections are highly contagious. Symptoms shown in a person infected by chickenpox are as follows.

Symptoms of chickenpox:

  • Before the chicken pox rashes start appearing on the body, symptoms such as fever, headache, stomach ache and loss of appetite are observed in children for 2 to 3 days.
  • After this, the rashes first start appearing on the face and tummy. These blisters are usually small in size, which spread on the entire body within few days.
  • They then turn out cloudy and burst leaving behind the crusts. Another group of blisters appear as soon they the previous blisters disappear.
  • As the severity increases the blisters also appear in the mouth, vagina eyelids. These are very painful.

Tips to prevent chickenpox:

  • Chickenpox can be prevented by vaccination. Even children who are vaccinated against the infection get the infection sometimes.
  • Chickenpox vaccine can also be given to the adults, but it is best to vaccinate the children.
  • Two vaccines are given to them, the first one is given when the child is 12 to 15 months and the second vaccine is given when the child is 4 to 6 years.
  • If the vaccine is not given to you in early age, then you need to take two vaccines for chickenpox with a gap of 4 to 8 weeks in between.
  • Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease, so avoid contact with people who have the infection. The virus can easily infect you.
  • Avoid sharing food and other things with people who are suffering from chickenpox.
  • Keep them isolated from others.
  • If you lack immunity then you can be infected by the virus very easily. Therefore, make sure that you get a healthy diet that will help you boost your immunity, and give better resistance against the bacteria causing chickenpox.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet with lots of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and fibers that will fight any foreign particles entering your body.
  • Exercising regularly will also help you to have good resistance.
  • Children who have impaired immunity are found to be affected by the virus even if they are vaccinated by chickenpox vaccine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you notice any of the symptoms of chickenpox or feel that your child may be susceptible to the infection.
  • Follow proper hygiene for your children. If your child lives in unhygienic conditions, then the risk of infection increases. Wash your child’s clothes and use good quality disinfectants to clean them regularly.
  • Good hygiene is also necessary for children who have been infected by the chickenpox virus, in unhealthy conditions the matter gets worse.
  • Use antiseptic liquids, soap and warm water to clean your child’s body. Use a soft cloth to pat them dry.
  • Do not touch the blisters caused on your skin with your hands frequently. This will leave behind the scars that will not vanish easily and increase the severity of the infection.
