How to Prevent Chiggers

Chiggers are tiny mites that cause inflammation and irritation when they come in contact with your skin. They also make the skin red. These mites, which are also called harvest mites or red bugs, are mostly found in springs and summer. They are usually found in bushy places, in trees and shrubs. They are removed easily by rubbing the skin, but you can also prevent them by knowing how to prevent chiggers.

Chiggers usually do not bite you; instead they remain attached to the skin and secrete saliva. The chigger saliva causes irritation and breaks the skin cell, which is food for the chiggers. Chiggers like to drink these juices, so they cling to your skin whenever you go in the bushes.

Tips to prevent chiggers:

  • Scythe the vegetation in your backyards to reduce the population of chiggers from here. Your children, while playing in the garden or backyard may come into contact with these insects.
  • Wear full-sleeved clothes. Although chiggers can penetrate through any type of fabric, covering your body completely will help you in reducing the risk of chiggers. It is helpful if you choose tightly woven fabrics, it will make it difficult for them to penetrate.
  • Your legs need more protection, so wear high leather boots so that chiggers do not reach your skin. It is very hard for these tiny creatures to reach your legs through these leather boots.
  • You can also apply repellents to your skin while going in chigger prone areas. Make sure that these repellents are not allergic to you. You can apply repellents to both, clothes and your skin.
  • If you have been in a chigger-infested area, examine your body carefully to see if there are any chiggers attached to your skin.
  • Remove your clothes and wash them properly. Use a good quality detergent and soak your clothes for some time in the soapy water. Make sure that there are no chiggers attached to your clothes.
  • Spray sulfur powder on your body. You will get this sulfur powder from any pharmaceutical store, spray it on your body and this helps you in repelling these mites.
  • Take a shower as soon as you return from a chigger-infested area and apply anti-itching cream all over your body.
  • Do not scratch the rash developed due to chiggers, rub it with rubbing alcohol. This will help you in giving relief from the irritation and make the hot selling a little cold.
