How to Prevent Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity is the most widespread and common health problem that children of this generation are facing. Obesity further leads to many complications in the body such as diabetes, heart diseases, etc. Overweight children are found to be less active as compared to the other children. Sometimes children suffering from obesity affected by diabetes and other illness can almost lead to premature death. Parents are the key factors for controlling and preventing obesity among children. Parents’ involvement in planning the diet of their child and giving them proper tips on leading a healthy lifestyle is very important to prevent childhood obesity.

Some of the common causes of childhood obesity are unhealthy eating habits such as eating a lot of junk foods, eating refined foods, drinking sugared drinks and lack of physical activity. Parents should look after their children and help them understand the hazards of such habits.

How you can prevent childhood obesity:

Serve healthy breakfast:

  • Do not skip breakfast of your child. A healthy nutritious breakfast is very essential in maintaining the BMI of your child within the limits.
  • Include a lot of fresh fruits and other foods such as milk cereals, peanut butter, cheese, toasted English muffin, eggs, yogurt, frozen waffles should be given for breakfast for children.

Avoid fatty foods:

  • Avoid oily food. Children gain a lot of calories through fatty foods. This cholesterol gets accumulated in the body increasing their obesity.
  • Foods such as meat, tofu, eggs, whole milk and other dairy products contain large amounts of fats. Such foods should be skipped from their diet.

Balanced meals:

  • A balanced diet containing a combination of proteins and carbohydrates should be included in your child’s daily meals.
  • Proteins when included in adequate amounts help in stabilizing blood sugar level and help in proper digestion of food. Proteins help in increasing the metabolism of your kid that ultimately helps in proper digestion of food.
  • Foods such as fish and other sea foods, egg whites, beans, soy foods, whole grains, baked sweet white potato will help in giving your child sufficient amount of carbohydrates and proteins.
  • Other nutrients such as minerals and vitamins should also be included in your child’s daily meals. They are essential in proper digestion of foods.
  • Deficiency of calcium is also one of the reasons of obesity in children. Children should be given proper supplements of calcium. This calcium can be given to your child through dairy products, but opt for those dairy products that are non-fatty. Include dairy products such as skim milk, 1 percent reduced dairy products, fat-free or low-fat dairy products instead of giving them whole milk dairy products.
  • Vegetable and fruit juices should be included in their daily diet.
  • Insoluble fibers are also a good source of energy for your child. They provide a sufficient amount of energy to their body without adding a lot of calories to their body.
  • Soluble fibers help in stabilizing the blood sugar level of your child.
  • Encourage your children to drink pure water. Pure water of at least 8 to 10 glasses is very essential in proper metabolism and controlling the body weight.

Limit snacks:

  • Eating a lot of snacks and chocolates also leads to childhood obesity.  Look for the ingredients whenever choosing snacks for your child. Snacks that contain about 150 calories each pack are safe. Make sure that the snack which your child is eating does not have more than 150 calories. Eating a one or two packs of potato chips, pretzels would be of no harm to your child.
  • Eating a lot of chocolates is the most common factor responsible for obesity in children. Make sure that your child does not eat more chocolates.
  • Consuming a lot of beverages is also a reason for obesity in childhood. These beverages and junk food contain refined sugars in excessive proportions. These are an unhealthy option for your child.

Regular exercise:

  • Regular exercise will help in stimulating the hormones of your child. Certain hormones are very essential in controlling the BMI of the child.
  • Encourage your child to play outdoor sports such as volley ball, foot ball, base-ball, etc which are some of the best ways of exercises.
  • Cycling, walking, running will also help in reducing the calories of the child and thus controlling their body weight.
  • Exercise also helps in stabilizing the body sugar level of your child which is one of the keen factors in controlling the body weight.
