How to Prevent Choking

Choking can call up in a medical emergency and is life threatening, as it causes without any prior intimation. You may panic, as you are unable to react suddenly to this situation. It can happen with anyone; adults and children. However, most of the times, children are victims of this situation. Here are some common and easy tips that will help you know how to prevent choking.

Preventing choking in children:

  • Avoid giving food that your child cannot chew properly. Especially, popcorn, candy, nuts, crispy food such as chips, bread, etc
  • If your child has no teeth, crush the food properly before feeding it your child. Make sure that the food is not too dry and the child can easily engulf it.
  • Liquid food is recommended to children between the ages of 0 to 4 months. Infants of this age group are not even able to sit properly, so there is high risk of choking in them.
  • Ask your child to chew the food properly and swallow the food. Make sure that your child takes the second bite only after swallowing the first one and keep the head in forward position, so that the food can pass without any obstruction. Supervise your child while he is eating food.
  • Chewing the food will help in mixing the enzymes present in the saliva mix properly with the food. This break down the food and the food can easily pass through the esophagus and reduces the risk of choking.
  • Give your child small bites of food which can be easily chewed and there is sufficient space in the mouth to move the food while chewing, or else there is risk of the food entering into the throat directly.
  • While cooking, cut the food in small pieces and make sure that the food is cooked properly. Under cooked food cannot be chewed properly and eating such food could increase the risk of choking.
  • Toys that are too small and can enter into your child’s mouth should not be given to play. If this enters into their mouth accidentally, it can choke within their throat.
  • Clean the house properly and do not leave any stray objects on the ground. If your child inserts them in the mouth, that can block their throat, which can be very dangerous.
  • Do not give hard food that is not easy to chew. Ask your doctor whether you can give crushed medicines to them.
  • You can also search for information online to know proper positions while feeding your child. Books are also available that will guide you through this or else you can ask your doctor for this.
  • Do not feed them in hurry and give them plenty of water while feeding them. This helps them swallow the food more easily.
  • Do not offer food to your child while crying, laughing, playing or talking.
  • Sticky foods should not be offered to the infants. They can also cause choking.
  • If you are feeding your child with a bottle, then make sure that the hole of the nipple is not too large.
  • If you are breastfeeding your child, make sure that the child is held in proper position.

Preventing choking in adults: Even adults can have the problem of choking. They also need to take proper precautions while eating food. Some of the precautions for adults are as follows. Though most of the precautions resemble to that you need to take while feeding your child, there are some additional tips too.

  • Avoid stuffing the food in the mouth.
  • Take food in small bites only when you finish the previous bite.
  • Chew the food properly before swallowing.
  • Dink plenty of water while eating.
  • Do not eat food lying on the bed.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while eating. This will make your throat dry and increase the risk of choking.
  • Maintain a calm atmosphere around yourself while eating.
  • Do not pretend to be choked, when you are not in that situation, or else it may worsen the condition.
  • Do not panic when choked, be calm for some time and get fresh going outside for some time.
