Deforestation is the act of cutting down of the tress much more than the limit in which they should be cut. It is a must that you know the effects of deforestation and know how to prevent deforestation. Every year we face a number of natural calamities like floods, draughts, sand sliding, etc. All these are a result of deforestation.
Millions of lives are getting damaged due to the natural disasters caused by deforestation. We are cutting more and more trees to obtain land for housing and industrialization. We are sacrificing the environment at rate of our greed. We all need to take some steps to stop cutting down of trees as a member of this global community.
Nearly half of the mature plants in the tropical forests have been damaged as a result of deforestation. Previously about 1.5 to 1.6 billion hectares of the tropical rainforest was covered with beautiful tress which has now reduced to about 750 to 800 million hectares in search of land for industries and houses.
In Philippines 90% of the trees have been cut, while in Central America only 2/5 of the original forests of the country are remaining. There are many such incidences. It’s high time we need to take some actions to save our environment before the conditions get worse.
Tips to prevent deforestation:
- If you want to cut the trees then cut down only those trees that are matured. Do not kill immature baby trees. Remember we need only few minutes to cut down a tree, but it takes many years to grow one tree.
- For every tree you cut down plant another tree. This will help in keeping the number of trees constant.
- Join environmental awareness groups and conduct campaigns to create awareness among people to help them understand the negative effects of deforestation and the benefits of planting trees.
- Cut down the use of coal and firewood to heat up your fire places. They emit a large amount of soot in the atmosphere and consume too much of wood and coal.
- Limit the use of paper. Paper is made by cutting trees, so use only that much amount of paper which is required; do not make unnecessary use of paper. The major purpose of cutting trees is making paper. If you as a consumer restrict the use of paper then automatically trees will be cut in limited numbers.
- Use recycled paper-products. Products such as paper pads, shopping bags, books and tissues should be recycled and used. Recycling will ultimately save trees.
- Plant more and more trees. You can plant trees near your house or conduct such programs that will help you plant trees in the forests which are turning into barren lands by cutting down of the trees.
- Government of the country should impose ban on cutting down of trees. Strict action should be taken against people who cut trees without any reason.
- If you are farmer then make use of same land by following the method of crop rotation. In crop rotation we make use of the same portion of land for different crops. This helps in increasing the fertility of land due to which you can use the same portion of land for many days.
- Instead of making use of papers for writing you can make use of computers to write and save the information you want. Mainly in large organizations where large amount of data need to be saved, large amount of paper is required. Reducing use of paper we can reduce cutting down of trees.
- Various programs should be run by schools, colleges and other institutions to create awareness among people.
- Run campaigns in offices, help people understand the effects of deforestation and encourage them to plant more trees.
Follow the suggestions that are given above and you can also implement your own strategies that will benefit our nature and help in controlling the cutting down of trees thus preventing deforestation.
