How to Prevent Dry Drowning

People usually experience dry drowning when they are under water and their lungs fail to extract enough oxygen. This can cause muscular paralysis or sudden death in some cases. It is very essential to identify whether the person is at the risk of dry drowning to prevent it. This article on how to prevent dry drowning gives you some simple and useful tips on preventing it.

There can be many reasons that can cause dry drowning such as exposure to gas that displaces oxygen, over dose of free water while swimming, etc. The most common cause of drowning is the over dose of free water while swimming in children due to lack of proper water safety.

  • Before you go for swimming, examine the body of your child carefully. If they are tired more than the usual level then there is a possibility that you may experience dry drowning. Do not ignore this condition thinking that they usually get tired after swimming, but this can be dangerous.
  • If there is any difficulty in breathing after swimming or you observe any physical or emotional changes in your child then take your child to a doctor immediately.
  • It is necessary that you observe the child carefully after swimming. To treat dry drowning, you need to supply oxygen to your child immediately or else the condition worsens.
  • If your child is turning pale or bluish grey then he is affected by dry drowning and needs immediate treatment. Take him to the doctor or supply oxygen to him.
  • When water enters the lungs, it irritates the skin and causes cough. If the child has persistent cough after swimming or has severe pain in the chest then he is at the risk of dry drowning.
  • If your child is coughing while inside the water then take him out immediately, because while coughing more amount of water may enter his lungs triggering the condition of dry drowning.
  • Teach your child proper techniques of swimming. When the child swallows the water in pools, this water settles in the lungs displacing the oxygen present in the lungs. This causes dry drowning when the child comes out from the water.
  • Guide your child properly before you let him go into the pool. You can take help from the guards and the trainers for this if you are not able to guide your child yourself.
  • Do not let your child enter in the water for some time until he feels completely relaxed.
  • Performing warm-up exercises before letting the child into the water is very helpful and prevents dry drowning.
  • Observe closely and set limits for the time that your child should spend in the water. If your child becomes excessively tired and is at the risk of dry drowning after being in the water for a particular time period, then reduce the time.
  • Make sure that your child takes regular breaks and does not spend long time under the water. If he is participating in water sports then he should take breaks of considerable time in between and allow the body to relax and breathe fresh air that gives him sufficient amount of oxygen.
