  • Ear infections mostly cause discomfort in children because the eustachian tube, a passage which is present between the middle ear and throat are very small and is not able to keep the germs out. This causes ear infections.
  • As children grow up these eustachian tubes enlarge and can easily keep the germs away.
  • This passage is not completely developed until the child turns 3 years of age.
  • Even in adults if this passage gets blocked due to cold or due to some allergies it can cause ear infections, but it is more common among children.
  • Another reason for ear infections is the accumulation of the fluid or the discharge in the middle ear.
  • If the fluid is collected in the middle ear it presses the ear drum and prevents it from vibrating normally.
  • This fluid also blocks the passage of the eustachian tube and dampens the ear causing infection.

What can you do to prevent ear infection?

Proper Brest feeding:

  • It is seen that infants who are breast fed for a prolonged period have less chances of getting ear infections. The reason behind this is yet to be unveiled, but it works in preventing ear infections.
  • Proper technique of breast feeding is also very essential to prevent ear infections in children. Feed your children in upright position.
  • If you feed them in upright position then the fluid will not drain the eustachian tube. This decreases the chances of infection.
  • Even if you are bottle-feeding your child, then feed laying them in upright position. If possible avoid bottle-feeding your child because the milk from bottles can irritate their skin in the eustachian tube.
  • You can also make use of chiropractic adjustments to the skull and neck of the child which will help in decreasing ear infections by improving middle ear drainage.
