How to Prevent Fainting

Almost 90% of us must have fainted at least once in a lifetime. People generally faint due to weakness, and some not so serious complications in the body. In some cases, fainting frequently can be serious enough to be treated immediately. Therefore, it is necessary for every one of us to know how to prevent fainting.

Fainting causes collapsing. However, collapsing turns out to be a defensive mechanism that helps the blood flow to the brain. When adequate amount of blood reaches the brain of the person, he or she should become conscious after some time. If this doesn’t happen, you should seek medical help immediately.

When you collapse, you may injure yourself. Therefore, make sure that there are no pointed or hard objects around you that could injure you. Here are some tips that can help you prevent fainting.

Some common symptoms of fainting:

  • People experience weakness and dizziness before fainting.
  • They also have excessive sweating, nausea and experience light headache.
  • An increase in the heart rate, difficulty in hearing and momentary visual defect that leads to a person to collapse.
  • You may feel like everything is rotating and fall on the ground.

How to prevent fainting:

People of any age can faint. These precautionary measures are useful for all of them.

  • A healthy diet is very essential to prevent fainting. If you are healthy enough, then your body gets all the essential nutrients, and all the organs of your body function well, reducing the risk of weakness in your body and fainting.
  • Eat foods that are dark red in color such as tomato, carrots, cherries, apples, etc. such food contain plenty of folic acid that is very essential to control the hemoglobin levels in your body. Deficiency of hemoglobin in the blood is one of the major causes of fainting.
  • Exercise regularly, so that the blood circulates properly throughout your body, and abundant amount of blood reaches your brain to allow it function well.
  • Get up slowly whenever you sit down or bend down. Especially, if you are weak and do not have a healthy blood composition in your body.
  • Make movements of your legs periodically. If you have to sit or stand for a long time, the tension builds in your muscles and nerves. This hinders the blood circulation in the body, and the blood that reaches the legs does not flow to the brain properly.
  • Avoid straining while bowel movements, this will exert too much pressure on the nerves within the body and increase the risk of fainting. Avoid standing immediately afterwards.
  • Avoid going to places that are overcrowded and too hot when you feel uncomfortable. Such places make you feel uneasy, and as uneasiness increases, you may feel dizziness, and finally faint.
  • Do not wear tight clothes. Especially, clothes that are tight around your neck should be avoided.
  • Do not stay for a long time in compact and congested places.
  • Deficiency of oxygen in the body will also cause fainting, so avoid burning firewood in completely packed house. We usually do this in winters. Burning of wood increases the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and decreases oxygen.
  • Breathe in plenty of fresh air.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid consumption of alcohol and beverages containing caffeine.
  • Avoid smoking, you intake plenty of carbon dioxide and nicotine in your body while smoking cigarette.
  • If you  take hot water shower or steam, make sure that the temperature is not too high. Change the temperatures frequently.
  • Sometimes you may also get hyperventilated; in such cases use paper bags to breathe.
  • Diabetic people who suffer from frequent fainting need to control their sugar levels.

The tips that are given above are very helpful to prevent fainting. Follow them if you face frequent problem of fainting, else you should see the doctor.
