How to Prevent Fever

When your body temperature rises beyond the normal body temperature then you are suffering from fever. The normal body temperature is said to be 37 degree Celsius or 98.6 degree Fahrenheit. If this temperature increases at least by 1 degree then you are said to have fever. This article on how to prevent fever gives you some simple tips on preventing fever.

Fever is caused because of the infections and it may be accompanied by many other diseases. If your body temperature rises above 103 degree centigrade then you are at risk. In this case you should immediately contact your doctor.

Temperature can be detected using a simple thermometer. You can check the temperature yourself by placing the thermometer in the mouth, under arm, ear or rectum. Fever cannot be prevented as it does not show any pre-fever symptoms. Here are some of the symptoms which are shown by the people who are suffering from fever.

  • The symptoms of fever may vary and depend upon its causes.
  • Some of the common symptoms shown by people suffering from fever are cold, sinus, headache, etc.
  • Some people may also suffer from shivering. People suffering from fever start shivering because the temperature of the brain rises above body temperature.
  • A person may also start sweating once the temperature stars to fall.

Tips to prevent fever:

  • Proper hygiene is very essential to prevent any kind of infection. You wash your hands properly before eating food, and whenever you have touched a contaminated object.
  • You should wash your hands properly using a disinfectant soap, with water, whenever you use the toilet
  • Infections can be caused due to any reasons, so wash the vegetables properly before cooking them.
  • Red meat, poultry and any non-vegetarian food should be washed properly before cooking. They also contain lots of infectious bacteria. If not washed properly they attack the immune system of our body causing fever.
  • Maintain cleanliness in your house and surroundings. If there are any infectious products that can transmit infection, dispose such products properly.
  • You can also decontaminate such products by exposing them to ethanol, hydrogen peroxide and quaternary ammonium.
  • After disposing the contaminated objects wash your hands properly.
  • You can also get vaccinated against Q fever. The vaccine largely used against Q fever is Q-Vax.
  • Especially, people who work with animals such as veterinary doctors and farmers are more susceptible to fever. They are advised to follow proper hygiene.
  • If you have slight fever then you can take antibiotics. Antibiotics will help you lower your body temperature.
  • Enough sleep and rest is necessary for people suffering from fever, due to weakness. You won’t be able to recover easily if you don’t  get sufficient sleep.
  • It is necessary that you drink plenty of fluids when you are suffering from fever. There is a large amount of fluid loss in people suffering from fever due to perspiration and sweating.
  • Fluids should be taken in the form of water or fresh juices to meet the requirement of the body. Consult your doctor immediately if your temperature rises above 102 degree centigrade, because if the temperature exceeds this limit. If this persists for a longer time, then it can lead to fever seizures. This can be life-threatening.

However, fever helps the body’s immune system to work more efficiently as the bacteria and viruses cannot live in the body for a longer time at a high temperature. Hence, fever is not a disease. Follow the tips given above to prevent fever.
