How to Prevent Foot Odor

Foot odor or smelly feet is a problem that is caused because of persistent sweating. Sweating is discomforting and the foot odor that is caused due to sweating is much more embarrassing. The bacteria caused due to the sweat results in smelly feet. This can sometimes cause infection to the skin. This article on how to prevent foot odor gives you easy tips on preventing foot odor.

Preventing foot odor:

  • To prevent odor you need to keep your feet clean. Wash your feet regularly. Soak your feet in warm water regularly at night before going to sleep.
  • Remove your legs from the water and dry them using a soft cloth and apply a moisturizer. This cleans the dead tissues from the skin and prevents excessive sweating from the feet.
  • Wear proper shoes. If your feet sweat a lot, it would be safe to wear open shoes that                 allow the air to pass through them and do not allow sweat to stay for a longer time. This will help a lot in preventing foot odor.
  • It is very important that you change your socks daily. Odor form the socks will aggravate the smell from the foot and it is very embarrassing. You should wear clean socks daily.
  • If possible avoid wearing socks made from nylon fabric. They make your feet sweat more and make the feet damp increasing the chances of infection.
  • Wear cotton socks; they are a better for people who suffer from excessive sweat and foot odor.
  • Before wearing shoes, clean the space in between the toes leaving no moisture between them. This helps in reducing foot odor.
  • In summer, if possible avoid wearing shoes. If necessary, wear open toed shoes.
  • Avoid wearing socks during summer.
  • If your shoes stink, throw them away or wash them properly, dry them and wear.
  • Rub an underarm antiperspirant on your foot. Antiperspirants containing  aluminum and carbohydrate are much more effective.
  • Applying 5% or 10% solution of benzoyl peroxide gel will also help you in decreasing the bacterial growth on your feet. Apply this gel regularly on your feet to prevent foot odor.
  • Scrub your feet with a good quality scrubber. Use a body brush or wash cloth to scrub your feet.
  • The space between toes sweats more. Therefore, scrub them properly.
  • If the odor is really irritating, you can take medications to get rid of it. Ask your doctor for proper medicines to prevent sweating and foot odor.

  • Soaking your feet in a solution of black tea and cold water will also help relieve you from foot odor. Black tea is also believed to be a good deodorizer.
  • To do this, brew two bags of tea in 2 cups of water.
  • Add this tea to a bucket full of cold water.
  • Soak your feet in this water for 15 to 20 minutes before going to bed.
  • Doing this for 10 to 15 days, will considerably reduce your foot odor and the amount of sweat.
