How to Prevent Gas

Gas is caused due to undigested food.  When food is not digested properly the enzymes produced by colon participate in the process of breakdown of the remaining nutrients. This produces gas. It is the most common problem that almost every one of us face and it is very uncomfortable. Knowing the cause of gas you easily know how to prevent gas.

When this gas does not pass through the stomach and intestine then it leads to bloating. Bloating causes mild or sharp and severe abdominal pain. Bloating is mainly caused because of the excessive consumption of fatty foods, improper bowel movements, smoking, stress, anxiety and gastrointestinal infection, etc.

How to prevent gas:

  • Monitoring your eating habits will help you in decreasing the chances of gas as well as bloating due to gas. Note anything that is causing gas and avoid eating such foods.
  • Carbohydrate containing foods are mainly responsible for gas. Avoid eating too much of carbohydrates.
  • Foods such as baked beans, cabbage, carbonated drinks, Brussels sprouts and some of the fruits such as peaches, pears and apples are some of the common culprits.
  • If you love beans, but eating them is causing gas problem to you then soaking the beans for at least twelve hours will help you in reducing the amount of gas produced by the beans.
  • Eating pineapple, barley broth and papaya will help in getting rid of gas.
  • Proper bowel function is also very essential to reduce the amount of gas. Proper bowel function helps in passing away the stool easily through the stomach and reduces the chances of gas.
  • Intake of laxatives will help in proper movement of bowels. Aloe vera is one of the best natural laxatives that will help you in proper bowel movement. Eat a tablespoon of aloe vera gel regularly early in the morning. This will give you permanent relief from the gas problems.
  • Intake of refined sugars and starches should also be reduced. They are not digested easily and increase the gas.
  • Prolonged intake of antibiotics increase the acidity levels within the body. Increased acidity levels affect the movement of bowels causing gas problems. Try not to use medications that can cause gas.
  • Consumption of sodium bicarbonate increases the amount of gas. Sodium bicarbonate is responsible for increasing the amount of carbon dioxide within the colon and this forms gas.
  • Add fibers to your diet. Fibers help in proper digestion of the food when added slowly initially in small proportions.
  • Avoid talking while chewing food. Talking and chewing the food simultaneously increases the amount of air swallowed while eating. When excessive air is swallowed it results into gas problems.
  • Do not drink water immediately after you eat food or while eating food. Pushing the food down with liquid will increase the chances of production of gas.
  • Chew food well and eat your meals slowly. Chewing food properly will help you in mixing proper proportion of saliva with the food. This is very essential for proper digestion of food. If the food is digested properly then it can reduce the risk of gas.
  • Many sugarless candies and gums contain sorbitol which is a natural sweetener. Sorbitol does not absorb properly in the stomach this tends to formation of gas within the stomach.
  • Products that contain simethicone help in reducing the gas bubbles formed within the stomach. Try such products if you have a persistent problem of gas.
  • Drinking fennel tea will also help you in giving relief from gas. Drink a cup of fennel tea if you have any gas problems.
