How to Prevent Laptop Overheating

Laptops are overheated when you use them continuously for a long time. As compared to desktops, laptops get heated more easily because of their compact architecture and poor ventilation. Overheated laptops will create problems while you are working with them. It can damage the components of the system, so you need to know how to prevent laptop overheating.

What can cause laptop overheating?

  • The components present within the laptop generate lots of heat when they work. It is necessary that the fan present inside the laptop provide cool air around these components to prevent it from overheating.
  • If the fan is unable to provide proper ventilation to the CPU, it gets overheated.
  • If you are using your computer system extensively, keeping the CPU operating at high speed and running many programs at one time, etc.
  • Frequent gaming, running virus scans are also some of the extensive tasks that could lead to laptop overheating.
  • The surrounding temperature should also be controlled, if it exceeds beyond certain limit, it can make the laptop overheated.

Signs of laptop overheating:

  • When your laptop is overheated, you may face unexpected problems with your computer system. Your system may shut down unexpectedly.
  • Loud and irritating noise from the laptop while working.
  • Unexplained operation errors and appearance of blue screens of death suddenly while performing any task.
  • The components within your system may be damaged and stop responding suddenly.

Tips to prevent laptop overheating:

  • If you notice the above signs in your laptop, take preventive measures immediately or else you may need to make some expensive replacements within your system. It may cost a lot.
  • If your laptop overheats, turn it off for some time and allow it to cool. Some laptops shut down themselves, when they get overheated.
  • Always use the laptops on some cool surfaces like the desks or trays. If you use them on your laps then you may block the vents that provide ventilation to the laptop and it gets overheated.
  • If you are using the laptop on your lap and is gets overheated, lift it for sometime such that air is allowed to pass through it.
  • You can also use laptop cooler pad. This laptop cooler pad is an external device that helps in cooling the laptop when it gets heated. This USB powered fan can be attached at the base of the laptop.
  • If your laptop is being overheated frequently, you can also change certain settings in the BIOS. All the laptops allow you to make settings for the fan speed and the CPU temperature alarms that are involved in laptop overheating.
  • You should also clean the fan frequently. You can use an aerosol air duster to dust the dust trapped inside the vents.
  • If the fan is not clean or it is clogged, it keeps the hot air trapped inside the laptop case and this causes overheating of the laptop.
  • You can also use a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool to clean the laptop.
  • Do not charge your laptop for a long time. As soon as the battery gets full, unplug the charger. Some people work with the laptop keeping the charger connected to the plug. You laptop will be supplied with a constant source of electricity when you keep the charger plugged in and this will heat the laptop.
  • While buying a laptop check its features properly and look for its overheating issues. You can take help of your friends or a computer hardware expert for this. Select those laptops which rarely face the problem of overheating.
  • You can perform a simple check by keeping the laptop on your lap and observing whether the air vents are blocked or there is enough space for air to move in and out of the laptop.
