How to Prevent Laryngitis

Laryngitis is the inflammation cause in the larynx or the voice box. This larynx is useful for many functions such as producing sound, breathing and protecting the trachea against food aspiration. The most important function of the larynx is, generating sound and manipulating the pitch of the volume. Laryngitis causes irritation in the vocal cords and it can be prevented knowing how to prevent laryngitis.

Irritation caused in the vocal cords can cause hoarse voice and this can further cause loss of voice. In some cases, laryngitis lasts for few days and sometimes it can be for many days resulting into acute laryngitis. Laryngitis is caused due to viral, bacterial or fungal infection, excessive and aggressive use of vocal cords, exposure to drugs, etc.

Some of the common symptoms of laryngitis include,

  • Swelling in the lymph nodes and irritation and swelling in the vocal folds.
  • Due to the irritation and inflammation in the sound box, sound becomes horsey.
  • In early stages dryness of the throat and difficulty in swallowing are also observed.
  • Fever, flu, cold, difficulty in breathing and in severe cases blood is also seen in cough.

How to prevent laryngitis:

Few precautions and proper care will help you in preventing laryngitis.

  • Avoid using your vocal cords to extreme conditions. Do not scream and talk, or shout loudly.
  • As screaming damages the vocal cord, whispering is equally dangerous to the vocal cord. Whispering also strains vocal cord, so avoid whispering a lot.
  • Smoking and drinking should also be avoided. The chemicals present within them can irritate the larynx and make it susceptible to infections.
  • Passive smoke is also very hazardous to your health. Keep your children away from passive smoke as their vocal cords are delicate and not completely developed and can be easily infected and damaged.
  • Drink plenty of water so that your throat is well hydrated. You can also drink fluids in the form of juices. These fluids help in thinning the mucus within the throat, as a result of which you are less prone to infections.
  • Avoid eating lozenges and candies; they make the throat dry and more prone to irritation.
  • People, who are sick and suffering from cold, cough and fever should be isolated from healthy people in the house. You should stay away from them.
  • While coughing and sneezing cover your mouth properly, else you may transfer the bacteria and viruses to others.
  • If you have frequent and prolonged cough and cold, get it treated from a specialist.
  • Follow proper hygiene and avoid clearing your throat. This can irritate your throat, which increases the chances of laryngitis.
  • Do not eat spoilt food. Spoilt food contains fungus and virus; they can cause infection in the stomach as well as in the mouth.
  • Follow proper hygiene, wash your hands frequently and do not touch your mouth, tongue, etc with your hands.
  • Infections such as sore throat should be treated as early as possible.
  • In case of prolonged cough and cold, it is always better to use some home remedies in the form of ginger tea, gargling with salt water, etc. Taking medications for a long period will cause side effects and damage your immune system.
  • Stay healthy and eat a healthy diet so that you are less prone to infections.

This problem is common amongst singers as they use their vocal cords for a prolonged period. They need to practice on various magnitudes of sound and experiment with different pitches of sound. They have to take care of their vocal cord and do not exaggerate their practice sessions. Below are some tips that will help you flush out the infectious organisms in your vocal cord.

Gargling:

  • Gargling with salt water helps in killing the viruses and gives relief from sore throat and inflammation.

Ginger tea:

  • Add few flakes of ginger while preparing tea. It gives a soothing effect to your skin and helps in reducing the inflammation and redness of the throat.

Vinegar:

  • Add few drops of vinegar in water, or mix equal proportions of vinegar and water and gargle with it. Vinegar is a weak acid that kills the bacteria and viruses in the throat and clears it.

Garlic:

  • Garlic is also very helpful in keeping your throat infection free. You can simple churn a slice of garlic or add it into your food. This is very helpful in increasing your immunity as well.
