How to Prevent Melanoma

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that is rarely seen. This type of skin cancer affects the melanocytes of the skin. Melanocytes are also present in the eyes and bowel, but this cancer only affects the skin. The main reason for melanoma is exposure to harmful ultra violet radiations of the sun. It is necessary that you know how to prevent melanoma.

It is easy to cure melanoma if it is detected at an early stage. In spite of this the mortality rate because of melanoma is very high. Therefore, it is very essential to diagnose the disease at an early stage. If there are any abnormal changes in your skin, report it to your doctor immediately. Here are some tips to prevent melanoma.

How to prevent melanoma:

  • The best thing to prevent melanoma is to avoid exposure to sun. Overexposure to sun causes the effect of the ultra violet radiations that are emitted by the sun on your melanocyte cells.
  • Especially, you should try to avoid exposure to the sun when it is too hot. During this time the intensity of the sun rays is more and cause serious damage to your skin cells.
  • Using sun screen lotions that have a SPF of more than 10 is essential to prevent sun rays from damaging your skin directly.
  • Any protection that prevents the sun rays from reaching your skin directly is necessary to prevent the damage to your skin.
  • These sunscreen lotions should be applied at least 30 minutes prior leaving the house so that they work effectively.
  • People with lighter complexion are at high risk of getting melanoma, because the cells that are responsible for protecting them from the sun rays are less within their skin as compared to people who have darker complexion.
  • Do not sit in the sun intentionally to get tanned. Many people sit in the sun to get tanned, because this is harmful to the skin.
  • A healthy diet is also necessary to prevent melanoma. Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet in abundance. These are very helpful in supplying all the essential vitamins and minerals that will help you build good health.
  • Cover yourself while you are going out. Sun’s radiations are intense especially during 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wear long sleeved clothes and full pants during this time so that you limit the exposure to sun.
  • Prefer wearing dark colored clothes, because dark colored clothes are found to block the UV rays more effectively than light colored clothes.
  • Avoid using tanning beds or sun beds or sun lamps to tan your skin. These tanning beds make use of ultraviolet radiations to tan your skin artificially. If anyone has suggested you that these tanning beds are safe, it is not true.
  • Repetitive exposure to these tanning beds should be avoided. They can cause premature aging as well as damage to the skin and increases the risk of melanoma cancer.
  • Childhood exposure to sunrays should also be avoided. Exposing the child to the early morning sun rays is helpful in preventing the tan.

The preventive measures given above will surely help you in preventing melanoma.
