How to Prevent Migraines

Migraine pains are so severe and painful that you feel like banging your head to a hard surface. These migraines are actually caused due to the fluctuations in fluids (serotonin) present within the brain. People who suffer from migraines are most of the times unaware about how to prevent migraines.

The blood vessels dilate and shrink due to these serotonin fluctuations. When the blood vessels dilate there is severe migraine pain. There are many factors that are responsible to cause fluctuations in the fluid levels. These factors are changes in the level of hormone estrogen in women, changes in the blood sugar level, changes in your diet, etc.

If you have migraines then you must be noticing following symptoms.

  • Intense headache, this pain can be on the single side of your head or on both the sides of your head.
  • Sometimes the severe pain can also invite conditions such as nausea and vomiting.
  • Some people who have frequent migraines may have impaired sight.

  • Yoga and meditation are very good exercises that give peace to your mind and help the muscles of your brain relax.
  • Lowering your stress levels is very essential to prevent migraines.
  • Plan your daily schedule and work accordingly. This will also help you in give some time for yourself to relax. Watch a movie or plan for a picnic with your family and friends.
  • If you work continuously for a prolonged time, this can increase the risk of migraines, especially people who need to work in front of the computers for a long time.
  • Sitting in front of the television for a long time, children also increase the risk of migraines. Children should also be taught to maintain proper distance from the books while they are reading. If they read holding the book too closely or holding the book at a distance from the eyes then this can strain their eyes.
  • Strain caused on the eyes due to any reason can advance into migraine sometimes, so avoid straining your eyes for too long.
  • Get enough sleep. Sleep of at least 6 to 7 hours at night. This helps to relax your brain muscles. If your brain is not given enough rest, it can cause fluctuations in the levels of the serotonin that causes migraines.
  • A balanced diet is very essential to keep your body healthy. Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your regular diet.
  • Avoid triggers that cause frequent headache. You should identify these triggers and try to stay away from them. Some of the most common triggers that cause migraines are chocolates, alcoholic beverages, aged cheese, citrus foods, cultured dairy products, etc.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking is also found to trigger migraines. The nicotine present in the smoke is very harmful to your blood vessels. They induce harmful chemicals within your blood stream and force them to cause abnormalities in the body. People who smoke increase the risk of migraines by 60% as compared to non-smokers.
  • Products containing caffeine are also very harmful. For people who cannot quit such products completely should try to minimize consuming them. Coffee and tea contain lots of caffeine, if consumed in excess, can be a reason for migraines.
  • You should take immediate medication if you notice any signs of migraine pain. Painkillers are available for the migraines. You can take them when you have pain. There are prolonged medications for the treatment of migraines which are severe and last for a long time.
  • Women who have been detected with the migraines due to the triggers of estrogen should not take estrogen. Certain medicines contain estrogen; women should avoid taking such medicines.

The suggestions given above will surely give you relief from the migraines if you already have them and help you in preventing them.
