How to Prevent Plagiarism

To know how to prevent plagiarism, you need to know what plagiarism actually is. Plagiarism is the act of mimicking ideas and thoughts of someone else and representing it in the same manner and present it as your own work. Plagiarism is a serious misdemeanor, which can cost you a lot and can be a reason for expelling you from the school, college or the organization you work in.

Any work and viewpoints stated in any kind of paper is not necessarily their own creativity. These viewpoints are collected from someone else, and presented in a different form, as a summary of what the writer understands by reading a paper presented by another writer. When a student is given an academic paper for writing, teachers need to guide them about writing.

Tips to prevent plagiarism:

  • Teachers should develop creativity among children and welcome new and innovative ideas given by the students. He/She should help them in representing their ideas in a better manner and provide them necessary information and help needed.
  • Teachers should train the students and carry sessions on how to collect the information from the available sources. At the same time, it is important that they collect relevant information from authenticated sources.
  • You have to determine whether the information is of common knowledge and is universal, which cannot be changed and formatted. In such cases, it is not plagiarism and need not be changed, as facts do not need any citations.
  • Before starting to prepare your paper, understand the topic thoroughly and draw a summary of the information you have gathered or read. This will be make your work easy and prevent the chances of plagiarism.
  • Never copy and paste the contents from sources you have searched information for. This will increase the chances of plagiarism.
  • Some people copy and paste the information and make changes in it i.e. use synonyms of the words used by the others, change the structure of sentence, etc. This is plagiarism and is not acceptable. Paraphrasing is plagiarism
  • Try to express your ideas and put your own thoughts in essays and the paper you prepare.
  • Give references to your papers. When you are doing this, you are giving the references of the original writers’ ideas, which you are trying to express in your own words. Documents, which are documented by the original writers, are most of the times difficult to understand for common people.
  • You should be able to gather relevant information from these documents and express them in your own words.
  • If you are writing the actual words written or spoken by some other person which you don’t want to change and cannot change, should be written in quotations.
  • Once you are done with writing your paper, you should recheck the entire work done by you by proof reading your documents. If you find any duplication in your document, edit them appropriately.
  • You can also use online tools available for checking plagiarism, and the authenticity of the document presented by students.

Following the tips given above, you can easily prevent plagiarism and prevent cheating.
