How to Prevent Salmonella

Salmonella is a bacterial disease which is one of the most common food-borne diseases. Contamination through food is easily done and bacteria can easily enter into the body through food and cause serious effects on the body. Food poisoning due to salmonella can be treated within 5 to 7 days. In some cases long-term infection can be life threatening. It is essential that you recognize the symptoms of any food-borne disease as soon as possible because if it is not treated on time it may be life threatening. These salmonella bacteria show symptoms within 12 to 24 hours of entering your body.

The symptoms of salmonella bacteria include abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. These symptoms will vanish within 2 to 5 days if treated on time. If they are not treated on time it may aggravate to something more serious such as diarrhea, severe vomiting, dry skin and decreased urine.

Who is at high risk?

  • Individuals who have poor hygiene are at a higher risk of suffering from these food-borne diseases.
  • People who have poor immune system and suffer from disease frequently are also at high risk of having salmonella infection.
  • People who have pets at home such as reptiles and turtles also increase their risk of food-borne infections.
  • Prolonged use of antacids, corticosteroids and sharing household with infected person also invite food borne disease.

You can take simple measures to prevent salmonella infection which are as given below.

  • Salmonella bacteria can be easily transmitted trough non-vegetarian food, so it is very essential that you cook beef, chicken and other red meat properly before eating it. Washing it in warm water is a good option as it will kill all the bacteria that are responsible for causing infection.
  • If you are eating in a restaurant then make sure that the meat that you are served is cooked properly. If you are served uncooked meat then ask for replacement. One of the most common causes of salmonella infection is through half-cooked food.
  • Cleanliness in your kitchen is very essential. Wash your cooking place cleanly before cooking the food.
  • Wash your hands properly before cooking the food. Use an alcohol based soap and water to wash your hands. These are very good in killing the bacteria that may be present on the surface of your hand.
  • When you use some utensils, cutting boards for cooking meat, egg or fish then do not use them for cooking other food. Doing this you may contaminate other food items.
  • If you want to use them for other food items then wash them cleanly and then use them.
  • If you are handling your pets then do not cook the food with such contaminated hands. Wash your hands cleanly after handling your pets such as dogs, reptiles, tortoise, etc.
  • A large number of food-borne diseases are spread from the pets if we cook and eat with such contaminated hands.
  • Educate yourself about the temperatures at which the foods should be stored. Certain food need to be stored at particular temperatures, if they are not stored at these temperatures then salmonella bacteria starts growing in them. If you consume such food it can be very hazardous to your health.
  • In general it is recommended that hot food should be stored at 140 degree Fahrenheit and cold food needs a temperature of 40 degree Fahrenheit to keep them in good condition and prevent them from the harmful bacteria.
  • Do not eat or drink food that contains raw eggs. Some of the food that contains raw eggs such as homemade eggnog, hollandaise sauce, and undercooked French toast should be strictly avoided.
  • People having compromised immune system should avoid consuming food from packets and food from restaurants. Homemade food is the best option for them.
  • Infants should also avoid eating food from packages and tins.
  • While buying packaged food look for the manufacturing date on the package. Do not buy them if it has been more than a week from its manufacture.
  • Frozen meat should not be stored for more than two days in the refrigerators. The growth of bacteria in such meat increases if it is stored for more than two days.
  • If such meat is given to people with poor immune system, then they may be easily infected by salmonella bacteria.
  • Unpasteurized milk also contains many bacteria within it, so avoid drinking such milk.
