How to Prevent Sinus

The inflammation that occurs in the nasal passage or the sinuses is called as sinus infection. Sinus infection is caused due to inhalation of polluted air, exposure to toxic aerosols, etc. Sinus infection can cause headache, cough and pressure in the eyes, nose and thick nasal secretions. Sinuses are air filled cavities present in the skull. There are four sinuses in the skull which are connected to the space between the nasal passage and the nostrils. When bacterial or viral infection is caused, the mucus lining and the tissues of these sinuses are damaged. When sinus becomes more pronounced, the effects can worsen causing cold, dry and dusty conditions in the nose and fever.

A sinus infection is categorized as acute and chronic sinus infection. The acute infection lasts no longer than 10 days and the infection can be easily cured by medications. Acute sinus infection lasts for more than a month and occurs frequently; two to three times in a year.

How to prevent sinus:

  • Stay clean and maintain good hygiene. Wash your hands properly and do touch your nose, mouth or any facial part with your hands frequently. If your hands are contaminated then the infection can be transmitted to you.
  • Keep your nasal cavities moist. Carry a saline solution with your and spray the solution in your nose when you feel that your nasal cavities are getting dry.
  • Many a times sinus infections are caused due to dust allergies, fungi and mites. Therefore, keep your house clean and dust it regularly.
  • Do not keep spoilt food in your kitchen for a longer time. If the fungus builds up on the stored food, then dispose the food immediately because the tiny spores of the fungi can enter your body through the nostrils and cause sinus infection.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Fluids help in throwing out the toxins from the body and reduce the risk from any kind of infections.
  • If you are well hydrated then the nose drains naturally and reduces the chances of nasal infection.
  • Eat a healthy diet so that you have a healthy immune system. If you are well immunized then you are less at the risk of contracting infection. A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is always helpful to have better immunity.
  • If there are pets in your house, avoid close contact with them. Close contact with the pets can inject the bacteria and viruses breeding on their fur inside your nose and cause sinusitis.
  • If the fur of the pets enters into your nostrils, you are likely to get the infection.
  • Exercise regularly so that you are physically fit. If you are physically fit, the sinuses drain naturally and there are fewer chances of the sinuses getting clogged and inflamed.
  • Avoid exposure to chemical fumes such as fire extinguishers, cologne and perfumes. These can damage the mucus lining of the sinuses and cause sinus.
  • The chemicals that are present in cigarette smoke also pass through the nostrils and cause a great deal of damage to the sinuses lining and tissues. Therefore, avoid smoking.
  • If the atmosphere is too foggy, avoid going out. Wear nasal masks when you are going out and the climate is too cold outside.
  • If you are a swimmer, the chlorine that is added to the water can also irritate your nasal cavities, so wear masks while swimming.
  • If you are a frequent traveler, you are at risk of having acute sinus infections as you are continuously exposed to the harmful viruses present in the atmosphere. The risk is more if you travel by air. Stay better immunized if you travel a lot.
  • Get plenty of sleep and rest. This is very essential for proper functioning of your body and prevents it from deadly infections.
  • If there is lot of pollution in the atmosphere, take necessary actions to limit exposure to such pollutants.
  • Avoid consuming concentrated sweets in the form of chocolates, flavored yogurt, frozen malt and frozen milkshakes, etc. These foods cause swelling in the nasal membranes and increase the risk of sinuses.

If you are suffering from sinusitis, take antibiotics prescribed by the doctor. Do not take any medicines yourself. Elevate your head few inches by keeping a pillow beneath your head while sleeping such that the sinuses drain out.
