How to Prevent Swelling

Swelling or inflammation is the enlargement in the body part that can occur in any body part and the reasons vary largely. This swelling can occur throughout the body, or in some specific portions of the body. Swelling is characterized by redness, puffy skin, heat, redness and sometimes loss of sensitivity in those portions. It can be a reason of some serious medical condition at times. Therefore, know how to prevent swelling.

Causes of swelling:

  • Infection, injury and sometimes some heart disease
  • Improper blood circulation within the body. People who are ill for a long time also have swelling throughout the body.
  • Sometimes insect bites can also result in swelling. This swelling is sometimes less while sometimes the swelling is more and last for many days.
  • Allergies to certain foods and drugs can also cause body swelling. Swelling on the face, hands and legs is commonly observed in this case.
  • Disease such as scleroderma, lupus, and arthritis cal also make your body lumpy.
  • If the fluids within the body are not drained properly from the body and get accumulated in the stomach, kidney, body tissues, etc it can cause swelling of the body.

Here are some tips that will help you prevent swelling, edema, fluid retention or inflammation that is caused due to any of the reasons stated above.

Tips to prevent swelling:

  • Proper and regular movement of the body organs is very helpful to prevent swelling. Proper locomotion helps in proper blood circulation of the body. People who have frequent swelling on the legs and feet should avoid sitting or standing in one place for a long time. This restricts the blood circulation causing swelling.
  • If you have to stand for a long time in one place, wear supportive stockings that will help you prevent pooling of the fluids in your legs.
  • Body fluids move down due to the gravity. You should elevate your legs at least for sometime at night while sleeping, so that all the organs of the body get enough amounts of fluids. You can do this by keeping a pillow beneath your legs and elevating your legs at least 7 to 8 inches from your head.
  • Regular exercises such as running, jogging, cycling, etc, will also help in proper blood circulation and improve your cardio vascular functions. If you follow workouts in gyms, make sure you follow proper techniques while doing so. Many people have swelling on the body due to improper techniques used while exercising.
  • Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Fruits are a rich source of fluids, so include them in your diet. Water and fluids help in flushing out the toxins out of the body and remove the impurities from the body.
  • Reduce consumption of sodium in your diet. We consume lot of unnecessary sodium in our diet in the form of salt. Do not add excessive salt in your food and limit consumption of foods that are rich in sodium content. Sodium or salt causes fluid retention within the body that can increase the risk of swelling.
  • Repetitive motions of the organs of the body can also cause inflammation or swelling of the body parts. When people have to work for a long time in front of the computer systems, they usually complain about swelling in the wrist, legs, neck, etc. Such problems can be addressed by changing the positions at your workplace frequently.
  • Change the position of the mouse, monitor and keyboard frequently. Adjust the chair according to your comfort and take breaks in between. Perform stretching exercises for at least 10 minutes taking breaks after every 30 to 45 minutes to prevent swelling.
  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol. They are also responsible for body swelling as they affect the functionality of the body organs. The toxins that are induced in the body through intake of alcohol and cigarette get into the blood stream and spread throughout the body which can cause swelling in the body.
  • Sufficient sleep and plenty of rest are the primary preventive measures for any kind of abnormal functions in the body. Swelling can worsen if you do not give your body plenty of rest.
  • Do not wear tight clothes. Tight clothing and uncomfortable clothing will restrict blood circulation to certain parts of the body which can be a reason of body swelling.
  • Try to maintain cool atmospheres around you and also take some steps to reduce the heat within your body. Heat and humidity in the atmosphere are also some of the major reasons for swelling.
  • If certain part of your body has swelling, then elevating that part of the body for some time will help reducing the swelling.
  • Body swelling that is caused due to insect bites will go off itself after some days. If the swelling doesn’t reduce, then you will have to take some medications prescribed by the doctor.
  • Body swelling caused due to the heart disease, arthritis, obesity, liver disease can be controlled by controlling diet and medical help.
  • To be on the safer side, seek help from your doctor to identify the exact cause of swelling, if you have them frequently and get them treated. Some swelling problems can call up on serious medical conditions.
