In sports, defense is an action done for preventing the opponent from scoring another point. This term is sometimes used for the various tactics involved in defense, or a sub-team whose responsibility is defense. A defense player is a person who will prevent the other team from making any goal or forwards towards their team. These defense strategies of players are used only in water polo, ice hockey, football and some other sports.
Tips on How to Read Defense
Here are the some of the games and the defense they use.
- Ice hockey: In the game of ice hockey, there are two defensemen on the ice. One of the two players is offensive and known for his ability to glean the goals or assist than play as a strong defensive. These players are known as offensive defensemen.
- Water polo: In water polo, the offensive player is on the center forward, and has the ball right in front of the goal; the defender is not supposed to steal the ball.
You can read defense with careful observation and thinking and can easily avoid it. This article will give you some important steps on how to read defense in football.

Steps:
- Always remember that you must start reading defense from the left to right during the pass. For many of the right-handed quarterbacks, the options for passing go from left to right. In most of the cases, the receiver on the far left of the quarterback will be the first person to read defense and he will continue going to go in the interior left, interior right and then to the far right. The quarterback is looking for some indications through which the receiver will have enough time to open.
- Now, look for the receiver facing the ’soft’ coverage. There is a need to make the receiver a primary target by the quarterback guard. The reason for making him a primary target is because the receiver can face the quarter back guard in a distance of two to three yards. To avoid this problem it is better to keep safe and have a distance of 5 to 8 yards free in front of the quarterback.
- Always keep in mind, while reading defense, to look for weaker men to attack. Go through a film study on their previous games and try to understand their strategies and game plan. Look for their strong cover points and weak ones as well. Always be aware of a game trick, sometimes you will see that a strong cover man from the opponent has backed off and given your receiver a 6-yard cushion. He must be planning to set you up. Instead of going for this 6-yard shot, look for some weaker cover man who is challenging some of your top receivers. If that receiver has been asked to run a shot pass, then immediately change the game plan and ask him to go deep against the defensive back.
- Always remember that reading defense in the running play is much easier than understanding their game when not in the game. You have to be quick in understanding their plan while the game is going on. Unless the opponent has decided the interior to be with eight or more players, there is no need to change the game plan and go for a pass. However, if the defense has arranged more tacklers on the left side, then you must change your run and go to the right side. This decision has to be taken quickly so that your team members understand what is happening and make the correct adjustments. If you take too long to make the right call, then the opponents will understand the change, and they will make the similar alterations.
- Quarterbacks are the lifeline of the game; the entire game depends upon their quick thinking. They have to spend a lot of time going over the game plan and watching the film of their opponents as many times as possible so that they are well prepared for the game. A quarterback must read defense and understand it as well as he knows his own offense,
Tips and Warnings:
If this is your first time analyzing your opponent’s team, then don’t make it too complicated. Watch the entire film carefully and try to figure out the most dominant defenders in the game. Watch them to understand what you can do to make them slow or confuse them. You need not worry about all the 11 players but worry about the defenders in the game.
