Tonsil stones otherwise known as tonsillolith, is usually a piece or cluster of matter (usually made of calcium) which forms at the rear of the mouth next to the tonsils. These stones can also form in the throat and on the roof of the mouth. Tonsils are full of crevices which quickly get filled up with food, bacteria, dead cells and other materials get trapped. When these masses get formed the derbies combine and harden. Tonsil stones can cause your mouth to stink and is one of the leading causes of bad breath. These also cause discomfort in the throat especially while swallowing. Small tonsil stones can be almost invisible and hard to notice, but larger ones will be clearly visible and cause irritation. In this article we will take a look at a couple of methods with which we can remove any tonsil stones easily without going to a doctor.

Method I (Removing tonsillolith with cotton swabs):
- Take out a couple of clean cotton swabs. Moisten them just a little bit. Make sure that they aren’t dripping wet.
- Stand in front of a mirror in a well lit room. You could instead hold a torchlight in your spare hand or ask a friend to hold it for you. Hold your moth wide open so that your throat is clearly visible in the mirror.
- Look for tonsil crypts and when you see them sweep them with the swab. Do this carefully without pushing the stones further into your throat. Gently poke the sides of the crypt to pop out persistent stones.
- Once done use an oxygenated mouthwash and gargle your throat throughly. Rinse continually as each stone is removed in case of multiple stones.
Method II (Removing tonsillolith with an oral irrigator):
- Wash the oral irrigator completely. Fill the reservoir with a little warm water.
- Stand in front of a mirror in a well lit room. Alternatively ask a friend to hold a flashlight or hold it yourself. Flash around to locate any tonsilloliths.
- Turn on the oral irrigator you acquired and set it on low setting.
- Use the irrigator to irrigate your crypts with the pulsating water. Pay careful attention while doing this and remove one crypt after the other.
- Once done use an oxygenated mouthwash and gargle your throat throughly. Rinse after each stone to be hygienic.
Tips:
Do not use your oral irrigator on a higher setting unless extremely necessary. The force of the water can injure your throat and cause bleeding.
Be hygienic, wash your hands and mouth well before and after the procedure.
If these methods do not bring desired results consult a doctor rather than stressing your throat.
Tonsil stones arent dangerous as such and sometimes may also pass by unnoticed, but in case of a regular problem consulting your doctor would be a good idea.
