Headphone is a pair of tiny loudspeakers, or they are also known as single speakers. These headphones are held close to the ears, and are connected to a signal source like CD player, radio or amplifier. Headphones are also known as headsets, earphones or ear-buds. In telecommunication terms, headsets are described as a combination of microphone and headphone. This combination is commonly used for two-way communication, like telephone. Headphones are usually used with some fixed equipments like DVD players, personal computers and CDs. There are cordless headsets as well, which are not connected through a wire; they receive their signals through Bluetooth or infrared.
In the professional industry, headphones are used live by disc jockeys with sound mixers and DJ mixers. In radio stations, RJs use the headphones while speaking on the microphone; this avoids the acoustic feedback and echo. In recording studios, singers and musicians use the headphones for a play along process to a backing track. In military organizations, all kinds of audio signals are monitored using headphones. Sometimes the headphones stop working or the wire from the plug and socket gets disconnected. Repairing a headphone is a little tricky. Here are some simple steps on how to repair headphones.
Things Required:
- Soldering iron
- Broken headphones
- Spare plug
- Screwdrivers (for opening the earpiece)
Steps:
- First, find out where the damage is in your headphone. Usually, the damage occurs in the plug or the splitting point of the speakers. If there is damage at the splitting point of the headphones, then it is better to buy a new pair of headsets.
- If it is broken at the plug area, you will have to buy a new plug. Plug’s come in metal and plastic body, but metal plugs are much more expensive as compared to the plastic ones. However, it is better to buy metal plugs since they are long lasting.
- Now, take the cable and cut it just above the plug, but leave 1 inch of the cable. Strip open the wire, inside you will find one loose wire and 2 insulated ones. The bare wire is the common wire and the other two are left and right connections. You will have to try combination of these sets of wires and see, which one works.
- Unscrew the new plug; this plug will have two pins sticking on the outside of the plug. If the plug has only one pin, then you have a mono plug and not stereo.
- Fuse the wires with the plug pins and fix a cap on them. Check it and now your headphones will be working fine.
- If the headphones are broken at the earpiece, it is very difficult to fix them, but do not worry. Open the earpiece of your headphone and cut the wire approximately an inch away from the exit. Open the wire as mentioned before.
- Open he wire from the backside of the small speaker. Fuse the wires together at the old wires place. Test it before you put the cover back on. If it is working properly, fix the entire thing properly.
Tips and Warnings:
- Make sure that you do not hold the iron for a longer time on the wire. This tends to melt the plastic surrounding it and causes more damage.
- In the beginning, you can practice the process by repairing old or cheap headphones.
- Be very careful while fusing the wires, don’t get yourself burnt the soldering iron is very hot.
