A tent is a type of shelter, which consists of sheets of fabric or some other material. This material is draped or attached to the frame of poles or is fixed with a supporting rope. All the smaller tents are attached to the ground or free standing. The larger tents are fixed on the ground by a rope that is tied to the stakes or to tent pegs. The nomadic people first used tents, now tents are used for recreational activity and for temporary shelters. Tents are of various sizes from bivouac structures to large circus tents, which can fit in thousands of people. Tents that are used for recreational camping comes in two types: the tents which are carried by the backpackers are one of the lightest and smallest types. Smaller tents are easier to carry over a long distance.

Now, there are some specialized tents with spring-loaded poles, which can be pitched in seconds, but they usually take a longer time to strike. The second type of tent is larger, which is mostly carried in a vehicle. Depending on the size of the tent and the number of people involved, larger tents can be fixed in 5 to 25 minutes. Military organizations use such tents for temporary house troops under certain field conditions. Camping is the most popular form of recreation, which usually involves the use of tents. A tent is considered portable, economical and has no adverse environmental impact. Tents are made out of cloth and hence, they can be damaged over time.
