How to Replace Oxygen Sensor

Most of the new cars and old cars will have an electronic fuel injection system, which is regulated by a computer for the amount of fuel that is delivered in the engine. This computer will communicate with the sensors of the system the entire time to decide how much more fuel is required for delivering in the engine and how frequently. The oxygen sensor will be located in the exhaust manifold. One side of this sensor will detect levels of unburned combustible through the exhaust flow, and the other side will be connected to the wiring, which is relaying on the information from the computer. Then the computer will use these sensors for the readings to make sure that the engine is giving the right amount of fuel. If there is too little or too much of fuel, then this will change the readings from the oxygen sensor and will prompt the car computer to adjust the fuel settings.
How to Replace Oxygen Sensor
An oxygen sensor will fail after sometime. After the sensor starts malfunctioning, all the important information about the performance of the engine will be lost. As a result, the computer which runs on the electronic system of fuel injection will have no clue how much fuel needs to be delivered in the engine.

Sometimes the oxygen sensor will come along with a mileage rating, which will indicate how long the sensor will last. There are many ways to find this information and the easiest place to find this information is in the owner’s manual of your car. If you can find information about oxygen sensor in your car’s manual, then you can take help from the local auto parts store. You must know the mileage rating of your car for determining the condition of the oxygen sensor. If you know the duration when you last replaced the sensor, then you will get a hint of when you need to replace the oxygen sensor. Replacing oxygen sensors regularly will maintain the gas mileage of your vehicle and will prevent further car problems, will avoid failure on the emissions test, which is caused due to oxygen sensors. Here are some simple steps on how to replace oxygen sensors.

Things Required:

  • Creeper blanket
  • Extractor socket set
  • Hammer
  • 3/8 inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8 inch drive 10 mm socket
  • Upholstery tool
  • Straight edged screwdriver
  • Philips head screw
  • Lock washer
  • Threader
  • Nuts with thread and pitch

Steps:

  • The first step for replacing the oxygen sensor will be deciding which oxygen sensor you want to replace. Always remember that this will be the most challenging thing in the entire process. There are some garages that will find the oxygen sensor by scanning and diagnosing the engine code for free of cost. This will help you in determining which oxygen sensor you want to replace upstream or downstream. If you want to replace them all, then just make sure that the correct ones go in the correct banks. Most of the cars will be using the oxygen sensors in down and up stream both.
  • Now in the next step for replacing the oxygen sensor you will have to use a blanket and crawl below your car and find the oxygen sensor for replacement. Try to find the plug of the sensor and take a straight edged screwdriver for depressing the lock and unplugging it. You will need an upholstery tool for releasing the plug from the manufactured drilled hole and take the affixing wire out.
  • If the sensor you want to replace is the upstream sensor, then you will have to pull out a rubber plug, which will be running inside the passenger seat floorboard area. If this is the situation for replacing the oxygen sensor then you will have to open the passenger door. After that you will have to remove the molding from the bottom of the door with a screwdriver and lift the carpet for locating the plug.
  • Now for replacing the oxygen sensor you will have to find the area where the oxygen sensor will be bolted in the exhaust pipe. You will have to find out how the nuts are fixed in the place. It is not a common thing when the nuts start to deteriorate and will need an extractor for loosening them along with a ratchet. Once you have placed the extractor securely, then they will break free easily. If you don’t require the extractor socket, then use a 10 mm socket for removing the nuts.
  • Take out the oxygen sensor, and make sure that you have removed the old gasket and replaced it with a new one. Most of the new oxygen sensors will come along with new gaskets. Always remember that you must use an 8 or 1.25 re-threader for cleaning threads, which are on the bolts of the sensor flange, to ensure that they do not snap when you are placing the new nuts.
  • Now while replacing the oxygen sensor, start placing the new gasket on the bolts and keep the sensor on the top of the new gasket. Replace the nuts, lock washer and tighten the new ones in place.
  • Now you are done with replacing the oxygen sensor and you can plug the sensor back on the plug and fasten it on the frame or you can also replace the door molding and the floor plug.
