How to Replace Radiator Hose

A radiator hose is a system, which is used for transferring the coolant from the engine water pump to the radiator. It will be connected on the front of the radiator or on the water pump of the engine or on the intake clamp. Many of the radiator hose designs will be of molded hoses, which are specific to the application. However, there are many new improved designs, which can be bent or fitted into any different application. If you know how to replace radiator hose, then you save a lot of time and money.

When you are replacing the radiator hose, it will be wise to replace the hose clamp along with it. There are various types of hose clamps used; they vary from single strand to heavy spring steel, which is always installed with a pair of pliers to the most common screw type. There are some of the radiator hose designs that come with a steel spring inside the hose for preventing it from being pulled in when the pressure in the water pump increases.

In almost all the applications, the return radiator hose will be situated on the lower side of the radiator. Coolant is pulled in from the radiator with the help of the water pump through the hose and then it enters the engine block. This coolant is then pushed from the engine block and inside the heads through the water pump. Once the coolant completes its journey with the engine, it then absorbs a huge amount of heat. Later it pushes out of the engine and is sent back to the radiator for starting the cooling cycle.

There are many different dimensions of the hose depending on the design. As every vehicle has its own design of hose along with the bends at the right place, every vehicle will need its own size of hose. The rate of flow will determine the size of the hose required in every car model.

If in the engine the coolant is circulating too quickly then it will overheat. The coolant must have enough time inside the engine to absorb all the heat and enough time in the radiator to expel it. However, the radiator hose starts wearing out over the time due to increased pressure and overheating in the vehicle, which causes a leak in the radiator hose. At this time, you will have to replace the radiator hoses. It is a very easy process; here are some simple steps on how to replace radiator hose.
How to replace Radiator Hose
Things Required:

  • WD-40 silicone spray
  • Large pan or wide bucket
  • New radiator hose
  • Antifreeze
  • Utility knife
  • Funnel
  • Flathead screwdriver

Steps:

  • The first step for replacing the radiator hose will be switching off the engine as soon as you notice a leak, to avoid overheating of the engine.
  • Try to find out, which radiator hose is leaking and from where exactly the leak is coming by checking the wetness on the radiator hose.
  • You will have to buy one gallon of antifreeze and get the correct replacement radiator hose from a nearby auto parts store or from your car dealer. However, you must always remember that radiator hoses are never interchangeable. They come only in specific sizes and shapes for a particular car model, so buy the right one for your car.
  • The next step for replacing the radiator hose will be waiting for the engine to cool down for minimum 20 minutes, before you start working on the cooling system. Once the engine is cool, keep a large pan or bucket on the ground below the hose to catch the leaking coolant.
  • Now you will have to loosen the hose clamps with the help of a screwdriver from both the sides of the hose that you want to replace. Now for replacing the radiator hose you will have to remove the radiator hose by twisting and pulling from the point where it connects on the engine and the radiator. If the hose still does not come out then you will need a utility knife to cut it out from the fittings.
  • Now replace the radiator hose, fix it with a clamp, which you have removed from the old radiator hose. Replace the new radiator hose properly; if the hose does not go easily then you can use the WD-40 spray for spraying on the new hose. Now you can tighten the hose clamps.
  • Start refilling the radiator and the coolant reservoir with a half and half mixture of water and antifreeze. Now for completing the process of replacing the radiator hose, you will have to burp the cooling system by running the engine for sometime with the radiator cap off until the engine is warm. Always remember that you must keep the engine running until both the hoses start feeling warm. This process will indicate that the thermostat is open and the coolant has started flowing out from the whole system. When you start burping the system, it will allow all the air bubbles to escape. Now, you can add coolant to the radiator as required.
  • Check if there are any leaks, look at the surrounding area of the hose clamps and see if there is dampness. If there is no wetness then you can tighten the hose clamps properly.
  • Place the radiator cap back, check the level of the coolant before you start driving your car, just to make sure that there are no leaks.

Tips and Warnings:

  • When replacing the radiator hose, if it is leaking from around the clamp holding area, then you will have to tighten the clamp with the help of a screwdriver.
  • Always remember that while replacing the radiator hose you must never open the radiator cap or loosen the radiator hose when the engine is hot. The coolant will start spraying out and burn you.

Coolant is poisonous, so you must dispose it in a proper place and not in a sink or gutter.
