Each engine gear will have a limit, which is defined by the red line that is always defined by the revolutions per minute. When the gear of your vehicle reaches the limit, it has to stop spinning and let another gear power the vehicle. Your transmission system will be responsible for moving the power one gear to another without letting the engine stop, and transmission helps in making that happen.

Transmission fluids for both automatic and manual transmission systems act as the lubricant for the transmission system parts. Steps:
Preparing for replacing transmission fluid
- Before you lift your car, you must examine the transmission to diagnose the health of the same. You will have to run your car for this, so start the engine of your car and allow it to run until it is warm.
- Keep the gearshift in park and the emergency brake should be in place. Now you will have to check the level of the transmission fluid with the help of a dipstick, which is located in the rear of the engine.
- After some time pull out the dipstick, wipe it with a clean rag and again insert it in the tube, making sure that it is seated completely over there. Pull the dipstick out and check the film of fluid on the end. Some of the dipsticks will show levels of cool, warm or hot fluid. If the transmission fluid of your car is in good health, then the fuel level should not be low. It will have a pinkish or reddish color and will smell like petrol.
- If the transmission fuel appears burned and is low consistently, then it means that you will have to replace the transmission fluid.
Remove the old transmission fluid
- The first step will be to find the transmission pan, which will serve as the reservoir for the automatic transmission fluid. The pan will be situated below the dipstick.
- Once you have found the pan, now it is the right time to drain the fluid. Some transmission pans will come along with a drain plug. If you have the same pan then you can simple drain off the old fluid.
- However, most of the pans will not have a plug and the only way to drain the fluid in this one will be removing the pan. Before you start with the process, place a large pan below the transmission pan. Now, start loosening the pan bolts and the fluid will start leaking from the edges. Always remember that you must remove all the bolts or the pan will start overflowing and will create a mess. Instead, remove two bolts and tilt the pan and the fluid will start pouring in the pan.
- After this, you replace this fluid in empty milk jugs, so that you get an approximate idea of the measurement of the fluid. Now you can remove the transmission filter, which will be attached with clips and bolts.
Replace the transmission fluid
- The first step for replacing the transmission fluid will be cleaning the pan. Take a clean rag and wipe the entire residue from the inside of the pan.
- The next step for replacing the transmission fluid will be removing all the traces of the gasket from the edges. You will be able to peel away most of the gasket with your hand, but some of the residue will remain on the pan. To scrape off this residue you will have to use a knife or a flathead screwdriver, but be careful that you do not scratch the surface of the pan. Apply brake cleaner to remove some of the stubborn elements from the pan.
- When the pan and the pan bolts are dry, then you can replace the transmission fluid. Mount the new filter in position and place the O-ring. Reattach all the bolts and clips to secure the filter well in place. Now you can reinstall the pan with the help of the gasket with either a cork or rubber.
- Now you can replace the transmission fluid. You will have to do this with the help of dipstick tube, and with a longneck funnel. Pour a less amount of transmission fluid than you collected in the milk jugs. After you have poured the new transmission fluid in the pan, start the engine and allow it run for at least a minute. Make sure that the service and parking brakes are applied; you will have to move the gear selector through each gear till park.
- Now check the fluid level again and add little fluid to get it till the eight-inch below the ‘add mark’. Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches the full operating temperature, then check the fluid level once again, it will be in the hot region.
