Restoring a Fiberglass boat

  • Before starting to restore the boat, you will need at least one helper who will help you in restoring and fixing up the boat. If you are not a professional then it is advisable that you hire a professional for giving a better finishing to the boat. When you hire someone for helping you, start sanding the boat first. For this purpose, use a waterproof sander. This is necessary as you will be sanding the wet boat. For sanding the boat, you will need to have at least 800 grit sandpaper.
  • Now you will need a 1000 grit sand paper. Start sanding the boat properly with this 1000 grit sand paper. This is very time consuming and also involves a lot of hard work, but the results are very good and worth all the effort. While sanding the boat see to it that you change the sandpaper constantly throughout the process.
  • Now after this you will need the rubbing compound. This is a creamy chemical with many small sand granules. While using this on your boat, see to it that you don’t miss a single corner of the boat. However, don’t leave even a small quantity of this rubbing compound on the boat.
  • Once you have completed restoring the exterior part of the boat, you will need to clean up the interior. It is necessary that you clean up the interior properly. You can use powerful washer for cleaning it. If the seating is worn out, then try fixing up a new one.
  • After this, the next task is waxing. You will need to apply wax all over the boat. This will give a nice glossy look to your boat.

Restoring Aluminum Boat

  • First of all you will need to fix up the leaks in the boat.  For this purpose, you will need to put the boat straight up on the saw horses. See to it that you don’t drag the boat to the workstation. If you do so, the base or hull of the boat will get damaged. For putting the boat on the saw horses, take someone’s help. This will avoid injuries as well as damages.
  • Now pour water in the boat. When you pour a bucket full of water, you will easily come to know where the leakages and leaking rivets are.
  • Now tighten the leaking rivets there and then. To tighten the rivets, you will need to hit it by something really strong. You will need your helper here as well.
  • Now again check whether the rivets are still leaking. If there is no leakage then you will need to fix it again.
  • A tarp can be used to retain the paint when you feel the need. For doing this you will need to place the boat in the same on the saw horses as it was before.
  • Use soap and water to clean dirt and debris. Clean everything properly and then rinse the hull well with water.
  • If there are any old paint patches on the boat, use sandpaper to rub them away. Don’t use a powerful sandpaper, trying using a mid range grit sandpaper to remove paint and scratches. A soft grit paper will not be that useful as you want to sand an aluminum boat.
  • You will now need metal primer. Apply this metal primer on the hull. For applying this primer, follow the instructions properly as given on the label. Let the primer dry properly.
  • Now apply a coat of metal enamel. This metal enamel or paint has to be water proof. Apply it as per the directions on the label. See to it that you apply this paint on the metal primer only after the primer is fully dried. Now let the paint or enamel also dry properly and your boat is restored.
