How to Restore Backup

Back and restore tool is a valuable way to protect files and settings of your system used to run your system. As Microsoft says, if you try to restore your system, it will return to a previous state without losing information and important data. Windows XP’s Backup utility enables you to restore files with the help of an Advanced Mode wizard. Backup and Restore Center supplies an interface to manage all your backups and restore your files. To restore the files to the previous state it is necessary that you are logged in with administrator privileges. This article will tell you how to restore backup.

The following steps will help you restore backup in Windows XP. Restoring backup is moderately easy so go through the instructions below and learn to restore backup.

  1. First of all open the backup utility. Click on Start, point to All Programsà Accessoriesà System Tools. Click on “Backup” on the System Tools” menu.
  2. Open “Advanced Mode Wizard”. Click Advanced Mode link in the “Backup or Restore” window.
  3. Select the required backup file. On the “Welcome” tab in the Advanced Mode Wizard, click the Restore Wizard icon. Select “Browse” button if the required file does not appear in the list and navigate to the required appropriate file. Once you have located the backup file, click on the check box that represents the file that you wish to restore. Like for example, if you wish to restore all your documents, you must click the check box next to the “Documents and Settings” folder. Click on the “Next” button.
  4. Now you shall be able to restore all your files. Click “Finish” button to restore all your files to their previous original location. If you wish to choose where to restore files, security changes or how the existing files be handled then select ”Advanced” button to choose advanced options as above and move further to the remaining steps.  After you have made your selections, click on “Finish”.

Windows Vista has importantly increased its recovery and backup capabilities from previous versions of Windows. It now offers a very new “Backup and Restore Center” that merges various backup options into one. If you want to restore backup on Windows Vista then follow the steps below.

Windows Vista comes packaged with the “Backup Files” wizard. This was developed to backup all your important files and data. Windows Vista is also bundled with another tool- “Restore Files” wizard to restore all your data and files from backup.   1. Open “Backup and Restore Center”.
  2. Choose a location for backup. Click on “Backup Files”. Vista will search the backup devices and will list options that will include local media like hard drive partitions, DVD and CD drives, network locations and external drives. From the drop down list select the location where you would like to save the backup file, but make sure you have enough space to do that.
  3. To backup, select the files. Vista provides a set of some previously selected file types like, videos, pictures and music, by default. To choose files not on the list select “Additional Files” and click “Next”. Ensure that the files are from NTFS formatted partition because only they can be backed up.
  4. Launch a back schedule. Vista will automatically backup selected files monthly, weekly or daily. Select how often you would like to backup all your files and the day and time too.
  5. Start backup process. Then select “Save settings and start backup” to start the backup process. You can also “Cancel” to quit the backup process and even start all over again. A dialog box will appear before you that will notify you of the progress of your backup. To end back up, select “Stop Backup”.

The instructions given above must be carefully followed and one should remember before going through this process that you should be logged on with administrator privileges.
