Golf is a ball and club sport, where all the competing players will use different types of clubs and will attempt to hit the balls in every hole of the golf course in minimum strokes. Golf is the only ball game, which does not need a standard area for playing the game. This game is always played on a golf course; every course will have a unique design, and it will have 9 to 18 holes in the course. Golf is defined as, “playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance to the rules.” Knowing how to run golf tournament is very easy and one can organize the event for charity events.
There are many golf competitions organized around the year, and the competition focuses on minimum number of strokes played or the lowest score on individual holes. Each round of golf will be based on the number of holes that are given in order. A round will have 18 holes, which are played in the order, which is determined by the course layout. If there is a nine-hole ground, then a standard round will have two rounds of nine-hole ground. Here are some simple steps on how to run a golf tournament.
Things Required:
- Golf course venue
- Golf equipment
- Golf professionals
- Tickets
- Press release
- Volunteers
Steps:
- First, you will have to choose a golf course and always keep in mind that all the golf courses will have varying rate and each will give different services. A golf tournament is mainly organized for a charity event, so you will have to choose a course that is affordable. However, do not pick a public course or you will regret it later.
- The public golf courses will be very basic and if you are planning a tournament, then the venue must be enticing to the players so they would want to come for the tournament. If you pick a private golf course, then you will have better amenities and great customer service.
- Once you have picked the location you will have to look for sponsorships. Most of the profit your outing will generate will come from the sponsorships. You will need to have a committee of people and their sole purpose should be obtaining sponsors. The committee should have nearly seven people who will have business and community connections; they should have outgoing personality to make a sale.
- You will have to get basic sponsorship, like tournament sponsor, reception sponsor, golf cart sponsor, hole sponsor, gift bag sponsor, prize sponsor and beverage car sponsor. However, if you want then you can add some more sponsors as well.
- Now you will have to decide what kind of tournament you want to organize? Do you want to host a ‘Pro-Am’ tournament where the golfers will be paired with golf celebrities or a ‘celebrity’ tournament where all the national and local celebrities will participate. You can organize an open tournament as well where the golfers of all the levels will join the game.
- You will have to start advertising at least two months prior to the tournament. Add all the tournament posters in the local sporting stores and other shops where you think people will be interested to know. You can spice up the event by making a series of press releases listing of the expected ‘celebrities’ in your event.
- Set up a registration and payment desk before the event for decreasing the work pressure on the day of the tournament. This is the most hectic table throughout the day, since all the golfers gather here during the tournament. You will have to divide the golfers in small groups of four or two people, and the easiest way to facilitate this is by making a chart prior to the event. Golfers can come on the day of the tournament, check the event and get their partner assigned for the day.
- On the day of the event, you will need sufficient volunteers for running everything smoothly. Depending on the size of the tournament, you can have from 4 to 12 volunteers. Before the first player enters, your volunteers will have to spend some time in setting up the course. Make a checklist to make sure that everything is complete before the schedule of the tournament starts. Your checklist should have some things like sponsorship signs, displaying prizes and scoreboard. Just make sure that everything is set so that there is no confusion during the game.
- Try to make a fun environment for golfers of all the levels. If you are hosting a celebratory cocktail or luncheon then you must host it on the 18th hole. If you have organized live entertainment and good food, then you will get all the sponsors anxious for the tournament of next year.
- Keep a trophy for the winner and several other prices for other winning golfers. Try to organize a brief award ceremony at the end of the tournament. Thank all the supporters, sponsors and golfers for showing so much interest in the tournament and explain in short the mission and goal of organizing this tournament.
Tips and Warnings:
- One way to increase participation in the tournament is by enticing the players with great prizes. Get enough prizes and give them to the players throughout their win in the tournament. For instance, you can give prizes for lowest round, longest putt, closest to the hole and longest drive.
- Another sure way of raising money will be encouraging golfers to raise pledges. Try to set a minimum amount for every player to raise the pledge, in order for participating in the tournament. The reasonable amount of the pledge will be from 100 to 200 dollars. Many players would like to increase or decrease their money in the pledge. You can make the competition more interesting by giving a prize to the player who will raise the most pledges.
- If you have a tournament with competitions for longest putt and longest drive, then you can offer them the sale of mulligans for trying to hit the shot once again. For instance, if one of the players is not happy with drive, he can buy a mulligan for five dollars. This will encourage the player to not settle for a shot and he or she would want to improve after every shot. If multiple players happen to get in this mindset, then you can raise a huge amount of money from the mulligans.
- This step may seem like an obvious tip, but it is very essential for trying to save as much money as possible when you are planning a golf tournament. Therefore, you must check out all the possible golf courses, enquire about the prices and pick the best one. Most of the courses will offer you a discount when you promise them a definite number of golfers.
