Hurdling is a type of race on the track and field. The technique of this race is very different from the normal race. The main technique of this race is to accomplish all the hurdling actions while running the race. Many runners will rely only on the raw speed, but if proper technique is used then the hurdler will have the maximum speed, and will outrun the opponents. Usually, a hurdler will spend very little time on the energy that goes vertically on the hurdle and will achieve maximum speed in the horizontal direction. Learning how to run hurdle can help you a lot in the race.
There are many variants in hurdle; some people organize a shuttle relay race, although these races are rarely conducted. These races are always conducted on the track meets where they have the relay race. In the game shuttle hurdle relay, all the four hurdlers will run in the opposite direction from the preceding runner. Then the standard race will correspond with the standard sprint hurdle race of men and women.
Here are some simple steps on how to run hurdle.
Things Required:
- Running shoes
- Sprint spikes
- Blocks to sprint out of
- Hurdles
Steps:
- First, you will have to start with only 300 meter hurdling, you can do the 55 and 100 meter hurdling as well, if you are familiar with it. 300 and 100-meter hurdling will always take place on the outdoor track season, and the 55 meter hurdle will take place indoors. In a 300-meter race, the hurdles will be placed much farther apart, so that it is less necessary for counting the steps that come in between the hurdles. Most of the hurdles will learn to stutter the steps on every hurdle, so that they can have their dominant leg leading ahead and they won’t have a reason to hesitate before going to the hurdle.
- Always remember that you will have to attack every hurdle and stay low. Make sure that keep an even distance amongst the hurdle and the body on the whole race when you travel over the hurdle. The 300-meter hurdle is known as intermediate, as they have lower height as compared to 100 and 55-meter hurdles. Is it easy to get over them and this will help you in getting your sprinting ready. The only thing you will have to work on in the beginning is decreasing the airtime and gaining endurance for finishing the race.
- Now you will have to pull the lead leg around the hurdle. This will save a lot of time from needing to go up in the air and over it. The trail leg should be dragged in such a way that you will not be hitting the hurdle.
- Make sure that you run in full speed in the end and then push yourself with some force.
- When you approach the first hurdle, you should never try to avoid the stutter stepping. This will result in cutting the momentum and will cost you valuable time.
- You need to attack the hurdle by launching yourself from a distance of seven feet. All you have to do is extend you leg a little bit while it is bent, so that can easily clear the hurdle.
- If, as a runner, you want to complete the hurdle properly, then you must simply jump over it. You will simply have to adjust your hips over the hurdle.
- Once you cross the hurdle, the leg will snap back on the ground beyond the hurdle.
- If you happen to knock down a hurdle, then do not worry you must only concentrate on finishing the race.
Tips and Warnings:
- When you are coming out of the blocks, you must place your non-dominant foot ahead and get comfortable.
- Always make sure that you stay as low as possible to the hurdle, because it will help in increasing the speed and it will make sure that you are more agile to the steps in between the hurdle. Keep in mind that you must stretch well before entering the race.
- Sometimes, you can trip or fall at such time just get up and continue to run. Always try to stay in your lane, because if you leave the lane then you will be given a DQ.
