How to Save Fonts

Saving fonts on your computer from the internet is a relatively simple process and does not involve many complicated steps. If you know how to save fonts by downloading and installing them on your PC, then you can also use them for other Microsoft applications. When you download font packages from the internet, they will be mostly in compressed zip files and you will have to unzip these files to use them.

  • If you are using Microsoft windows 2000 or have opened the classic view control panel then click on the Fonts icon directly.
  • Now, in the File menu, find the option Install new font and click on it and select the drive you want from the drives list.

Save fonts on Mac

  • Mac operating system recognizes Open type and True type fonts but does not recognize the PC bitmap fonts.
  • You will also have to unzip the compressed files using software programs such as the Stuffit Expander.
  • If you are using Mac OS X 10.3 or above versions, then double-click on the Font file and click on “Install Font” button which you will find at the bottom of preview.
  • In case you are using Mac OS 9 or an earlier version, you will have to first convert the font files that you have downloaded. You will have to then drag the font suitcases in the Systems folder. The system will then prompt you to add them in the Fonts folder.

Save fonts in Linux

  • There are two methods which you can use to save fonts if you are using Linux.
  • In the first method, copy and save the .ttf or.otf font files to the location fonts:// in File Manager.
  • Alternatively, you can go the home folder and select view and then show hidden files in the menu. You will be able to see the hidden folder named .fonts. If it not there you will have to crate it and then save your fonts files in this location.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although Microsoft Windows is capable of managing up to 1000 fonts, don’t install many fonts at a time as it will slow down your system.
