Most of the people think that goldfish are one of the excellent pets for someone who does not wish to invest a lot of time and money for their pets. The attachment and lifespan formed with the goldfish will depend upon how much care you provide and whether it is the proper way to care for your goldfish. For this, you must know how to take care of a goldfish.
Goldfish are not short-lived pets. In fact, if you care properly for them your goldfish will live for a decade. The longest living goldfish was the one who lived for 43 years. Here are some simple steps on how to take care of goldfish.
The Tank
- Always remember not to put your fish in fish bowls, even if you plan to get one fish you must have a big enough tank for increasing the life of your fish. Most of the people will buy a goldfish bowl, simply because it looks pleasing from our perspective, but it is not good for the fish.
- The goldfish can start outgrowing the fishbowl, but they will require oxygen to enter the water from surface. Therefore, the larger the surface area the happier and healthier fish you will have. Always remember that you must never get a tank, which tapers at the top, because it will not give enough surface for oxygenation as compared to a tank with enough surface area.
- Clean the fish tank everyday for providing your fish a hospitable and healthy environment for living.
Size
- Goldfish will start with a small size, but they can grow up to one foot long if you happen to take good care of them. Initially, new goldfish owners will buy a small tank and replace it later as their fish starts growing. It is sensible and economical to buy a large tank right at the outset.
- One rule that you must follow is to get a 20-30 gallon tank for one gold fish and add extra 10 for every goldfish that you add. They will grow bigger in size and excrete a lot of waste. They will need enough room to roam about for making themselves happy, which is not surprising.
Hood
- Goldfish are very famous for jumping out of an open tank. To avoid this kind of calamity it is always better to buy a hood and this will give a platform for lighting as well.
Light
- Always opt for fluorescent lighting instead of the incandescent variety. You can save some electricity with this and this light will emit very little heat. You will have to keep the lighting on for 10 hours everyday.
Gravel Floor
- Gravel is one of the best choices for the floor inside your goldfish tank. There are various reasons for this; the first is that it will never affect the pH of the water as compared to coral.
- Secondly, gravel will be a great surface for the bacteria to grow. These are the bacteria that work to break down the dangerous waste elements, which are produced inside the tank.
Water
- Tap water can suite the goldfish and you can use it throughout the life of your goldfish. Most of the tap waters will have a neutral pH, which is seven or higher. Goldfish will always thrive on neutral pH, which is between 7.2-7.6 pH.
- Goldfish are very strong as compared to the other fishes and they can easily survive in water, which has pH less in optimal. However, the optimal pH is very simple to achieve, so there is nothing to worry about.
- In the initial days of your tank, when the ecology inside the tank has to yet established you will have to check the pH regularly with a testing kit. You will just have to make sure that the pH does not rise or fall suddenly. If you notice that the pH inside the water is changing undesirably, then you will have to buy a buffer from the local pet store for combating this problem.
Changing and Adding Water
- Before you collect the water in the container, allow the tap to run for a minute. Allow the tap water to sit out for one full day before you add it in your tank. This is known as the interim period, it helps in taking out the chlorine from water and ensuring that it reaches the same temperature to the water in the tank.
- Always remember that ammonia and waster products will start building up quickly inside your fish tank. Therefore, you will have to make sure that your fish filters work well to maintain the tank and the health of your fish. The filtration system should help in keeping the water in good quality. However, you will have to make sure that you change the water every week. In this process, you will have to remove more than a quarter of the water and then you can replace it with the tap water that you have made.
Filter
- Keep in mind that goldfish will produce a lot of waste and waste will increase the ammonia levels inside the tank. Ammonia is toxic to your goldfish and you will have to keep it at the lowest level. For doing this, you will have to increase the growth of new bacteria and invest in a good filtration system.
- You will have to maintain the filters as well and replace all the filtering elements to get good waste management inside your fish tank. Remember that you must always replace the filtering materials in a staggering manner, rather than doing it at once, this will give a smooth transition to the goldfish. You must change the filters every month.
- You must always use an undergravel filter, which will help in promoting the biological filtration from the gravel. This undergravel system will increase the oxygen inside the gravel bed and will flourish the growth of good bacteria.
Fish Food
- The diet of a goldfish will include both vegetables and meat. However, it is always better if you stick to the packaged food made for the goldfish, rather than making a diet from scratch.
- You must feed the goldfish small amounts of food several times in the day. Ask the pet store to give you a small supplemental food, which you can give occasionally to the fish as a treat. These treats will be peas, worms, insect larvae or tiny lettuce.
- Sometimes if the goldfish eats dry food, it creates pain in their stomach. Therefore, always soak the dry food in water for sometime and then give it to them.
Airstones
- Airstones are the cheapest way to make your tank look interesting, and it is true that goldfish enjoy swimming in the bubble stream. The airstones also help in increasing the oxygen inside the tank, so you must buy one for your tank.
- You can add some more goldfishes in the tank to keep them company. However, you must never add a tropical fish, because they need different water temperature as compared to gold fish.
This information will be helpful for you and you and your goldfish can start a loving friendship! Goldfish will completely defy our notion of mischaracterization of fish as being loveless and unrewarding pets. They will recognize you and cherish your attention for them.
