How to Teach Alliteration

Alliteration, mostly seen in poetry, involves repeating a particular sound in the first syllable of a series of words or phrases. For teaching alliteration to students, you will first have to make them understand what alliteration is. You can do this easily by searching for poetry that uses alliteration. Encouraging students to use alliteration in their poetry will help them better understand how to tone their poems. This article will tell you how to teach alliteration in easy to understand language.

Before you begin teaching alliteration to your students, you must keep some things in mind. Your objective for teaching alliteration should include the following things:

  • You should first explain to students what alliteration is and how it is used in poetry.
  • Give some pieces of poetry to students and ask them to identify examples of alliteration from those pieces.
  • Encourage students to analyze how the use of alliteration in that particular poem contributes to the beauty of the poem and also explain its purpose.
  • Students should be able to use alliteration on their own in their own creations.

Examples of alliteration:

  • Ben broke his bat at Bobby’s house.
  • The pots and pans were Patricia’s prized possessions.
  • Sam’s soul sings like a saxophone.

Here are some steps to help you teach alliteration:

  • Assign one letter of the alphabet to each student in your class. Make sure, if possible, that each student has a different letter.
  • Ask students to write 5-6 lines starting with that letter. These lines could be phrases, sentences or form a story when connected to each other.
  • This activity will help them think of many words starting with a single letter.
  • As the students think of words, they will realize they can make many fun sentences and thus will enjoy this activity.
  • When all students are done, ask them to exchange their sheets to share their work with other students. This way they will have a better idea of how alliteration is to be used.
  • Once the students are comfortable making phrases or sentences using alliteration, ask them to compose a poem using alliteration.
  • They can choose any topic of their choice, but keep in mind that in a six-line poem there should be at least six words starting with the same letter.
  • Students can again share their poem with the rest of the class and thus enjoy learning through this activity.
