Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is an emergency procedure which uses a combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions. CPR is used during emergencies such as accidents, poisoning, suffocation, near-drowning etc. Knowing how to teach CPR to your kids and family members is a good thing as they will also know what to do in such emergency situations.
CPR is most effective when it is administered as quickly as possible; however before performing a CPR you must determine first if the person actually needs it. CPR is to be performed only if a person is not breathing properly or his blood circulation is not proper. In such a case, CPR will help restore the circulation of blood, rich in oxygen, to the brain.
Here are some simple steps to help you teach CPR to your kids:
- First, teach your kids about the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in very easy to understand language. Teach them that the heart pumps all the blood required by the organs in our body. Teaching them only the basics is a good idea and will help them easily understand why and how CPR can save lives.
- Teach them in the form of ABCs, which will help them to remember the step by step process of performing CPR.
- Start with A, which stands for Airway. Therefore, the first step of CPR is to make sure the airway of the person is not blocked. Get your kids to open their mouths and look at the airway opening using a mirror. Teach them that this opening needs to be clear so that the air can get into the lungs.
- Next comes B, which stands for Breathing. The next step of CPR is check if the person is breathing or not. If you find that the injured person is not breathing, then you need to blow some air into his mouth. Have your kids listen to your chest and see the movement as you breathe.
- CPR ends with C, which stands for Circulation. In this last step, see if the injured person’s heart is beating or not. If the heart has stopped breathing then it will have to be revived by pushing on the person’s chest, thus manually pumping the heart for him. This will promote blood circulation. Let your kids listen to your heartbeat and teach them how to check the pulse.
- Make them practice all these steps of a CPR once in a while. However, also tell them that it is better if an adult performs the CPR, so they need to be taught about dialing 911 in case of any medical emergencies or accidents.
If you want to be a trained instructor for teaching CPR then you will have to get accreditation from The American Red Cross. You must be 16 years to be eligible for becoming a certified first aid and CPR instructor. Here are some steps to teach CPR as a certified instructor:
- You need to first find a location to hold your classes. If you are a volunteer for Red Cross you will get to use their office for taking your classes free. If you have a large vacant space in your house, you can take the classes there too.
- Prepare your room with all the necessary equipment and dummies. If you are a Red Cross volunteer, you will get all the supplies from them. Make sure you have everything ready in advance to avoid interruptions in your class.
- You need to also advertize in your community that you are taking CPR classes. You will have to mention in the ad the fee you will charge and the timings of the classes. You can put your ad in the local newspaper or distribute flyers and posters in your community.
Follow these above suggestions and start teaching CPR to friends and family.
