A webcam is a device used to capture videos; it is connected to the computer or other networks and it often uses a USB port or, is connected to a network, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Webcam is mostly used for video telephony, which permits a computer to act like a video conferencing station or videophone. It can be also used for some messenger programs like Skype, Yahoo and Windows Live Messenger. Other uses of webcam are video recording or even images. Webcams are famous for low manufacturing costs and flexibility, which makes them the lowest cost form of video telephony.
The word webcam literally means a video camera that is connected to the web continuously, which gives a view for anyone visiting the web page. Webcams were originally made for continues exposure, but many people prefer privacy. Privacy is lost when Trojan Horse programs allows malicious hackers to automatically activate cameras without the user’s permission. This also provides the hackers with live videos. Apple’s old external camera called iSight was able to thwart this. Many webcams now come with a built in LED that lights up each time, when the camera is active (e.g. apple’s internal iSight)
There are many effects of webcams; it allows a user to video chat, web-casting in professional and amateur ways. Sometimes they are also used for online dating. There are many videos that are made using webcams on YouTube. They are also used for security purposes.
Here are some tips on how to use and turn on your camera, which is situated on a HP laptop

Things Required:
- HP mini webcam (built in)
- Broadband internet connection
- Video enabled messenger program
Steps:
- Check if the HP laptop is connected to the power cable, or if its battery is fully charged. The webcam increases the power load on your laptop. On the front side of your laptop there will be a power button; switch it on. The webcam of the laptop depends upon the hardware to run. Wait for a while for windows XP to start. Windows XP is the operating system of HP laptops.
- Now, select the ’start’ button, which is placed on the left corner of your screen.
- Choose the option ‘Start New Program’ and then click on the option ‘media’. You will see an icon that says ‘cheese; click on it. ‘Cheese’ is the default photo and video sharing software, which is installed in all HP laptops. This software will automatically start the built-in camera at the top of the screen.
- Click on the ‘photo’ button on the cheese software screen, it will take a picture with the built-in webcam. You can also click on the ‘video’ option and start recording.
- Check if your video conferencing is working. Make sure that you have an internet connection. Go to the start ‘new program’ option and click on the Skype icon.
- Sign in into your Skype account. There will be some automated instructions on the screen to start video chat, follow those instructions. Your video chat will start immediately.

that is great provided your version of XP has a tab for “start new programs” Mine DOES NOT!
HP mini notebook,1151nr running on XP, I can clikc “start” and that’s about as far as I can go with this GREAT tutorital. You would think they could supply an alternate route to such a simple function should it not be after the start tab in your XP.
